He lost his childhood homes, dozens of family members, and most of his hearing in his left ear to Israeli bombs, yet Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib (@AFAlkhatib) insists that Palestinians must also take responsibility for Gaza's destruction and for peace.
On a new episode of EconTalk, he envisions a demilitarized Gaza run by nonpartisan technocrats, a Palestinian identity defined by aspiration rather than opposition, and direct Israeli-Palestinian dialogue—starting with a "Great Reset" of 100 days without violence on either side.

In his new book,@afalkhatibargues Hamas has held the Palestinian population hostage for 20 years. Read his interview with @jewishinsider jewishinsider.com/2026/08/ah…
Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib, who lived in the Gaza Strip from the age of 10-15, describes himself as an advocate for the Palestinian people. Since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led terror attacks in Israel, 33 of Alkhatib’s immediate and extended family members have been killed. But in his latest book, Hamas and Its Two Million Hostages, Alkhatib argues that Hamas — rather than Israel — bears primary responsibility for the suffering and political stagnation of the people of Gaza.
Alkhatib is a resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, where he directs Realign for Palestine, a project focused on pragmatic, nonviolent Palestinian advocacy. There, he denounces Hamas and advocates for Palestinian statehood alongside a secure Jewish state.
On Friday, Alkhatib spoke with Jewish Insider about his new book, his experiences growing up in Gaza and his outspoken criticism of Hamas. He also discussed the backlash he has faced from within his own community and why he believes that, ultimately, the terrorist group will have no role in the enclave’s future.

I spoke with @jaketapper on CNN about Gaza and my new book, Hamas and Its Two Million Hostages, underscoring the troubling persistence of support for the terror group among activist & diaspora circles, even as Gazans increasingly reject Hamas’s fraudulent, discredited narratives.
