Mike Ditka didn't just play football, coach football, and talk football. He was football. Iron Mike died Oct. 9 at age 86, and the tributes pouring in tell you everything about the man's reach.
Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Drew Brees, Matthew Stafford — they all joined Jim Gray on the 'Let's Go!' podcast to honor the Hall of Fame tight end, Super Bowl-winning coach, and Chicago Bears legend. Brady credited Ditka with inventing the modern tight end position, saying every pass-catcher he ever threw to "owes something to Mike." Belichick said going up against Ditka's teams meant "an absolute brawl and fight all the way to the finish."
Ditka won a Super Bowl as a player and a Super Bowl as a head coach. He was the first tight end inducted into the Hall of Fame. He became a broadcasting force who never used a filter. And according to those who knew him best, the man behind the mustache and the cigar was the most generous person they'd ever encountered — quietly helping players in need, families in crisis, and strangers in distress, expecting nothing in return.

“This is not about Mike Ditka. Football owes me nothing."
FLASHBACK: Years before his death at 86, NFL legend Mike Ditka took his fight for retired players to Capitol Hill, urging lawmakers to help those struggling to receive disability benefits and support.
“I owe my whole life to football,” Ditka told lawmakers, stressing that he wasn't fighting for himself, but for former players who sacrificed their bodies for the game.
The Hall of Famer used his voice to champion the players who helped build the NFL and needed someone in their corner long after leaving the field.
