This is your perennial reminder that maybe, just maybe, we don't need 282 million permutations for evaluating a pool of ~300 PhD applicants.

Today we welcome the Class of 2028! It’s a time to make new friends, meet Dean Jim Pfaendtner (@JimPfaendtner) and meet an alumnus, Gil West. Welcome to #NCStateEngr!
It’s all fun and games until you have to deal with 100TB of tape archive at your old institution.
All of my sponsored research DMPs call for archiving data from pubs for 5 years and I no longer have grant money to pay for data earlier than 2019.

For wellness day, staff at @NCStateEngr organized a fun set of events for our students including a marathon 3 hour "gaming with the dean" event. It was super fun to connect with students over shared interests and hear a bit about how things are going.

Our IT streamed the event and, in retrospect, I don't know if we need 3 hours of me getting obliterated in Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers. But here we are 😂😂😂.
Registration is now OPEN for FOMMS 2024 - THE conference this summer (28 July - 1 Aug) for molecular modeling and simulation! Come join us at Snowbird.

We used this terrible event for a case study in senior design in 2007 to help students think through process safety and design. IIRC there was a very high quality report that students were able to use to try and reverse engineer sequence of events.
at a BP oil refinery in 2005, an improperly-operating isomerization unit released a cloud of flammable vapor that subsequently exploded*.
15 workers killed, 180 injured, $200 million in damage.
the US Chemical Safety Board made this high-quality video detailing the incident.
thanks @checlams1 for showing me this.
will show this video to my process dynamics class tomorrow, since we're modeling the liquid level in a tank (pertinent to this incident).
* my reaction, expressed non-scientifically: what a sh*t show!
