I notice Popeye is trending, so here's a reminder that THIS 3D background appeared in a cartoon back in 1936(!). It was created using "The Stereoptical Process", which used a model as a background to 2D animation. Wow.

It’s worth noting that Beavis and Butt-Head debuted in the 1992 short “Frog Baseball”, which was made independently, shown to a festival, and is copyrighted to Mike Judge himself. So the iconic duo weren’t a work-for-hire creation, which is excluded from the 35-Year-Rule.

Looks like a major Paramount IP is being taken back by its creator. According to Puck, Mike Judge let Paramount know he will reclaim the rights to Beavis and Butt-Head in 2027 thanks to a U.S. termination clause that lets creators gain back their copyrights after 35 years.

Remember, under U.S. copyright law, creators can claw back rights to their work 35 years after their grant took effect. Beavis and Butt-Head debuted as a series on Paramount’s MTV in 1993, but the wisecracking duo actually debuted on the network the year before in shorts created by Judge. So depending on when his deal was signed, 35 years from 1992 would be 2027, which makes the termination notice timely right about now. Losing U.S. rights to make new episodes would sting for Paramount: B&B is actually back in production, with Comedy Central having renewed it for a 12th season. (Paramount and a rep for Judge declined to comment.)

While shooting CUTTHROAT ISLAND in Malta, I brought my 16mm camera to make a black-and-white short film. When the production blew up the pirate ship, I captured the massive explosion. This was one of the last big-budget studio films to rely almost entirely on practical in-camera effects and stunts. Regardless of its initial reception, making this film was the adventure of a lifetime. This is from a recent scan of my original camera negative.
