"How was your day, dear?" "Mixed. I supplied the nation with the means to save hundreds of precious lives per year and live with greater freedom and joy." "How is that 'mixed'?" "They didn't notice."

Wait. One of these AI things discovered the flaw in PHP and got fixes underway before anyone could exploit it? I've been mislead about the role of AI in society.

This is really good corporate behavior. (Internet-age caveat: if real)
To the resellers who helped build Trezor: thank you, and I’m sorry 💔

The processing of such imagery is a search. When done for the government, such searching is regulated by the Fourth Amendment. You're welcome.
New: an AI company now lets cops identify specific houses, using data from Zillow/Airbnb, based on a single photo. It's part of Raven, previously called Geospy. Company previously demoed its tools to catch people vandalizing Flock cameras or protesters 404media.co/ai-company-lets-…

Sharing the biases of a government agency may make it appear neutral or independent. But what if there's a different ideological world whizzing past yours at 1,000 miles an hour? What makes your world terra firma, while the other is not? If you suspect I'm subtweeting you, I am.

Where does "don't print this email" rank in the virtue signaling hierarchy? Below wearing a mask alone in your car, but not far! Above pronoun declarations, which can stand a chance of helping in rare instances. Next, rank tweets about others' virtue signaling... #hypocrisy

The Flock camera debate has let me publicize my decades-ago recognition that the humdrum automobile license plate is a privacy outrage! Early in the testimony at the link, I cite Congressional testimony 25 years ago talking about this problem! #proofofold aei.org/wp-content/uploads/2…

A favorite author of mine says, "*processing* of imagery gathered in public is the search." aei.org/domestic-policy/the-…
Interesting question that comes up in the CA5 argument: If querying a Flock database is a search, can the government get a warrant for it, or are the databases illegal to query, at least absent exigent circumstances, under the Smith precedent? (panel is Elrod, Richman, Ramirez)

HR bought employee-monitoring software without telling IT. Screenshots. Active time. Idle time. “Productivity scores.” Then they asked me to deploy it company-wide. I said we should pilot it first. HR agreed. So I installed it on HR. By lunchtime the HR director’s productivity score was 41%. She called me immediately. “This is wrong. I’ve been working all morning.” The software showed 2 hours and 17 minutes of inactivity. “I was interviewing candidates.” The laptop was idle. “I was in meetings.” The laptop was idle. “I took a phone call with Legal.” The laptop was idle. She said the system needed to understand that work can happen away from the keyboard. I agreed. Then I asked how it was going to understand that for the 700 employees she wanted to measure. Silence. At 3:40 PM HR emailed me: “Please pause rollout while we reassess whether activity metrics accurately reflect employee contribution.” Pilot lasted six hours. Turns out workplace surveillance becomes nuanced the moment the dashboard starts describing management.

The Facebook Internet Tracking Litigation court says at 601: "Plaintiffs adequately stated claims ... for invasion of privacy, intrusion upon seclusion, breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, [and two more]." Then, at 610, ...

Like Hollywood has award shows that make Hollywood seem really important, AI has effects on "knowledge workers" (e.g. pundits) that inspire them to treat AI as really important. It's not *not* important; it's just not as important as the punditry see it and tell us to see it.

I really appreciated this reality check from @natolambert. A lot of AI people underestimate how much the physical world matters, and how little impact AI has had on it so far. interconnects.ai/p/when-will…

And did I just make "punditry" into some kind of collective plural noun?
