Just truly upsetting how quickly this scene became invaded by clout chasers, self aggrandizing posers and people who simply do not give a fuck about games. I'm so tired of this.
decomp.dev, a site to track decomp progress, is being sunsetted after 2 years. this is due to a lot of reasons but i'll cover the main reasons in this thread.
Outisde of Marvel fans, there was no reaction to them back then. People accepted them as characters in a roster. Crossovers weren't always fanservice or glorified ads, but a learning experience. To bring in new folks and spark a natural curiosity about what they engage with!

These are some of the cool hand painted game box titles I did in the early 1990s! This has become a lost art in the digital age.

"ai art is bad because i don't like it" is a bad hill to die on because eventually there will just be ai art perfectly tailored to your preferences
i much prefer "ai art is bad intrinsically because the point of art consumption isn't to maximally engage my pleasure centers it's
I want to be very clear: this is dystopian and evil.
But it's frustrating to see so many responses along the lines of "gross, *I* would never want this."
It's like we've learned no lessons from the last 20 years. Did you want short-form video infinite scrolls? Did you want 40 TV streaming apps? Did you want the pretense of digital privacy to disappear? Did you want independent websites to die and get subsumed into a few mega-platforms run by oligarchs? Did you want every news platform to go behind a paywall? Did you want algorthims to fracture us out of common culture and into a bunch of polarized bubbles? Did you want Amazon to eviscerate bookstores? Did you want your attention colonized by the smartphone? Did you want the general enshittification of your digital life?
It doesn't matter what you *want*. It matters what most people will *buy*, and how that will ultimately shape the choices available to *you*, too. We have got to break out of the consumer-choice frame when talking about new technology. You, as an individual, sneering at the slop will not stop it. You, proudly announcing that *you* are too smart and tasteful for this won't stop it.
At a certain point, if you want to stop the total obliteration of a common human experience, you will have to turn to the state, to methods of coordinating collective action. You will have to actually fight this thing, not merely abstain from it as an individual consumer preference.
Little bit of JMV lore: This was the first video game I made artwork for. Forever grateful to Erik for the big break. It's great to see it come back!

I genuinely feel like we need LESS output from everyone right now. In every creative medium.
Quality is going down because of rushed work. People are burning out just to keep up. And no one even has time to engage with how much stuff is being made.
Feels bad to see people call this AI when Mitchell has been working on it for a while. To train your eye, notice the consistency between shots here. Details like Snake's hair, collar, gear and weapons specifically. These are things to look out for more than polish and quick cuts.
Quite frankly, anyone bemoaning the fact that they have to be more wary and pay attention to stuff like this need to grow up a bit. You were always meant to engage with the hard work of other artists with mindfulness and critical thought, especially when it took years to make.
