Calling all wild and crazy iPhone Duo apps! What should I try? Bonus points if they do something ridiculous with the folding screen.

Pfft. 10,000 folds? Winning the iPhone folding race over here in New Jersey.
Apple absolutely nailed the build quality. 🔥 @mediastorm_en folded the iPhone Duo 500 times, then pushed it all the way to 10,000 folds. The crease became more noticeable, as expected, but the hinge STILL looks solid. 💀 Apple really did a great job with the hinge engineering.👏

Meet Hingey, our custom-built iPhone Duo folding robot. Over four nights, it folded the phone more than 32,000 times. YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED NEXT. (Or maybe you will.)

To be clear, despite X’s Made with AI label, Hingey is real. I am real. The iPhone Duo is real.

Awesome. X keeps labeling my shorts “Made with AI.” Except they were shot, edited and animated by humans.

I had two complaints about the iPhone Duo’s design that Apple responded to directly. Both are in my newsletter: 1) It gets warm. During FaceTime calls, while using the camera and sometimes just using other apps, the Duo can get quite warm. Apple says that’s the new thermal design working as intended, moving heat away from the chip. Glad the chip is cool. My hand isn’t. 2) Touch ID pushes my buttons. Instead of just using Face ID on the phone screen, Apple told me it wanted to keep unlocking consistent whether the phone is open or closed. But I’m mostly unlocking it in phone mode. Why not give me Face ID on the outside and Touch ID on the inside? I’d take convenience over consistency. Read the full review here—gift link: thenewthings.com/p/iphone-du…

There are a lot of iPhone Duo reviews out there. Only one involves a custom-built robot trying to fold it to death. My iPhone Duo review is here. youtube.com/watch?v=bxDTWuL9…

And it’s live! My iPhone Duo review. For seven days and seven nights, I’ve been testing the crap out of this thing—including folding it over 32,000 times with a custom-built folding machine. Go watch!

Big week for local, on-device AI! Meta + Apple are teaming up to run Muse Spark Open on M5 Ultra Mac Studios. Tomorrow, Microsoft launches its Nvidia RTX Spark-powered Surface Laptop Ultra. It's basically a mini AI data center in a laptop. I've been running local models on it. More in my latest video! youtube.com/watch?v=e0RrzOZh…

I sat down with Microsoft's @satyanadella to talk about the new Nvidia-powered Surface Laptop Ultra, whether AI is going to kill us and, of course, the original cute AI agent: Clippy.

I've read this numerous times now, and “We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from” strikes me as such a bizarre flex. Like announcing your house caught fire and then casually mentioning you used your own brand of fire extinguisher.
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work. At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated. We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.
