Promised Mass Deportations. Delivered Window Dressing They promised a million deportations a year. The administration is on pace for about 660,000 this fiscal year, short of the promise. Meanwhile, roughly 14 million people are still here illegally. At that pace, it would take more than 20 years just to keep up with what’s already here. Now one of the men who led the crackdown is saying it out loud. Greg Bovino was the face of mass deportations. He was pulled from his command in January and retired in March. Today he calls the administration “weak” on deportations and its pullback in Minnesota a “surrender.” @JakeLang puts it more bluntly: it’s kabuki theater. Big press conferences, viral raid videos, and numbers that don’t come close to what voters were promised. ICE agents are doing the work. The question is whether Washington actually wants the job done, or just wants it to look done. Mass deportations were the promise. Voters deserve to know why they aren’t getting them.
