Ny bloggpost. Varför är kritiken mot kognitionsvetenskap så hård?

Denna bok bör bli en kioskvältare. Upplägget, innehållet och det visuella, fullständigt briljant!
Tack @JonasLinderoth och @AndreasJemstedt
50 years of Judas Priest’s Sad Wings of Destiny. Still one of the greatest heavy metal albums ever made, dark, dramatic, melodic and decades ahead of its time.

I don't understand why people are using the relative stability of England's PISA scores as evidence that reforms haven't worked. If [choose your pet theory] is causing declines in most rich countries, flat scores must mean that something in England is countering this trend.
We are accused of being advocates for a research tradition that reduces education to memorisation. The studies we draw on are dismissed as “naive positivism”. Read my latest Substack here: jlinderoth.substack.com/p/wh…

The ecosystem of teacher training is like the Wild West. Anything goes, snake oil everywhere. Much of these mad strategies are promoted through commercial PD, when they should have been made unthinkable due to high quality teacher prep- which still doesn’t happen. Faculties of education internationally have a duty to help trainees develop critical faculties sufficient to be immune to this, but many still don’t.
This is why I started @researchED1- because evidence-informed practice was still the exception, not the norm. In a sane world, Ed faculties and teacher prep would be doing the lifting on this. But this is not that world. Until then….

Knowledge is the foundation for critical thinking.
In this episode, I talk with Robert Peal about why a knowledge-rich curriculum matters and why critical thinking is an outcome of building knowledge, not the starting point.

Not ALL education research is terrible (e.g. a lot of ed psych researchers set up good studies w/ statistical analyses). But a lot of education research is terrible and can often be spotted as such just by exercising critical thinking skills.
If the education claim being made is counterintuitive, and supposedly backed by research, that research is likely is bad.
I've been reading shoddy education research for absurd claims in math education for ~15 years. Here are a few of the things that are supposedly backed by education "research" that I've looked into and found the research to be terribly flawed or non-existent:
❌standard algorithms are harmful
❌timed tests cause math anxiety
❌taking math makes a teacher worse at teaching math
❌learning math in groups on whiteboards (BTC) improves math learning
❌procedural skill harms understanding
❌inquiry is the best way to teach math
The field has a problem. I'm glad reporters are writing about it, but the policymakers (e.g., in schools of education, school districts, government level) need to do something about it because it will keep happening and districts and schools will keep buying products based on fake research claims.
