Why is there no statutory ratio for babies on the PN ward? This means the baby is treated as an extension of the mother and midwives are caring for double the number of individuals, e.g. 16 instead of 8. Please make day to day staffing safer @YvetteCooperMP #CountEachBaby

if we want those shopfloor staff to engage in any meaningful way with corporate/political agendas around use of scarce resources, productivity they have to be involved in solutions (which the survey shows they aren't) and feel valued and supported Not firefighting/surviving

Doctors supporting physiological processes @catherineroyuk
it was good to join @BBCFrontRow last night to talk about social prescribing. It's really important that we do not overpromise - and I have massive concerns about medicalising the need for normal human interactions. This claim in the press release from the Southbank Centre/

Jeremy, you were well placed to support maternity teams. Unless you want all women to opt for elective CS, there is absolutely a place for physiological birth when appropriate. Framing system issues as an 'ideology' risks diverting attention from wider challenges.
After the repeated evidence we've heard of 'normal birth' ideology contributing to harm, I very much welcome @YvetteCooperMP clear words: there is no place for ideology in childbirth. #BabyLossAwarenessWeek

What does Dr Kirkup say about the understaffing, conditions and significant increase in UK caesarean rate + other issues raised by maternity teams? Can he work with and advise @YvetteCooperMP on driving improvements?

Repeated themes in the Amos report: understaffing, low morale, burn out, bullying, soaring caesareans, worsening outcomes, racism, poor facilities. Since 2015, data shows maternity services have deteriorated into a dangerous mess. Normal birth ‘ideology’ is not the issue.
NEW: A major national review into maternity services heard “repeated” evidence of “normal birth ideology” despite concluding it was not “widespread” – partly because it relied on AI evidence summaries – a former expert adviser has warned hsj.co.uk/patient-safety/amo…

Sepsis caused 133,484 hospital admissions in England in 2024/25, and can be fatal within hours. A new Modern Service Framework aims to change that, with NICE evidence helping the NHS treat sepsis faster and more consistently. 🔗 orlo.uk/8PVJP @NHSEngland

If physician associates are able to train in "medicine" and are magically able to see patients independently in two years - why does it take doctors 5 to 6 years medical degree and 10 years postgraduate training before achieving independence? We have to decide whether we want a safe healthcare service delivered by fully trained doctors or go back to a free for all where anyone can practice medicine with a cursory level of knowledge/ training and do away with medical degrees / medical training It's like living in a parallel universe where simultaneously you need over 15 years of training to be considered safe as a doctor but anyone else can do a simple course and get stuck in.

Please please please stop using "simple" when describing a blood test. Headline & standfirst writers love it, but it is unhelpful. The cliché grossly misleads with regards to the complexity of interpreting and contextualising the results (especially when equivocal).

Good luck and best wishes to all our newly qualified midwives and those starting their university courses - waiting for your PIN is usually the longest break a midwife will have had in the past three years.
Unlike most other courses that break up in June til Oct, Midwifery is typically a 45-week course; two weeks off in the summer and at two at Christmas.

If a baby’s head goes beyond a certain point within the pelvis, a caesarean is most definitely not “safer”. Higher risk of PPH, bladder damage and damage to the (stretched up) cervix which can cause tragic second trimester loss or extreme preterm birth in subsequent pregnancies.
