Today would have been my big brother Luke’s 44th birthday. Sadly he passed away last Tuesday from cancer. He was a loving father and husband, successful academic and my best friend and I’ll miss him terribly.
I have spent a lot of the past few days trying to make sense of this. But sometimes things don’t make sense and all we can do is sit with our grief and hold the people we love close. The best advice I received from someone during my brothers illness was never leave anything unsaid. Tell the people what they mean to you.
Happy birthday bro, I love you.
This list is pretty sound to be fair
Public services should be accountable. But too often multi academy trusts are not. You end up with the absurd situation where a trust boss on a quarter of a million a year can override the wishes of parents with no scrutiny. That is why I’m supporting my colleague Dave Robertson’s bill to make MATs publicly accountable.
Calder Valley relies on our manufacturing sector. But with the average worker in manufacturing being 50 years old we need a new generation of manufacturing workers. With West Yorkshire Manufacturing Services recently receiving a ground breaking Robotics Hub and great companies including Denford LTD who run the global STEM racing competition in Calder Valley we have a great opportunity to train our young people for jobs of the future. I was proud to talk about this in a Westminster Hall debate in Parliament this week.
Last week Parliament voted to end the presumption of contact in the family courts. Here is what it means.

It's time to raise taxes on harmful gambling machines.
Today, 90 Labour MPs have written to the Chancellor, calling for an increase in Machine Games Duty for harmful high-stakes gambling machines.
Fantastic constituency Friday
Today has been a brilliant day in the constituency. I held a surgery this morning where I talked about issues from women’s safety to frustrations with the health service, followed by a meeting with our local NHS trust and then a constructive engagement event with local farmers. We covered a wide range of topics including sustainable funding, upland management and rural crime and mental wellbeing of farmers. I will be sharing their feedback with ministers.
I defy you to spend a year under cover in the Lib Dem’s HQ and find a single interesting thing to report on!

NEW
UK GDP in August now up 0.7% on the 3 month measure… rises by 0.1% in the single month, defying expectation of a fallback after strong July.
June also revised up.
Heading for a decent Q3.

“The UK is actually one country where action to reduce debt and deficit has been taken decisively and we see the UK in that sense enjoying a bit of a better growth prospect”.
IMF MD Kristalina Georgieva just again singled out UK for its plans to reduce annual borrowing, amid more general warnings that advanced economies should “get house in order”, after the forecast figures released yesterday.
Also said growth is not enough for US to reduce rising borrowing…
Replying to @faisalislam
Pretty striking…. UK now basically only significant G7 consolidation (3.9%), 2 on basically 0, 3 show actually increasing headline borrowing between 2025 and 2031, based on IMF projections.
This is headline borrowing - should get new figures on primary deficit etc overnight too
I know a lot of my constituents are concerned about the proposed Calderdale Energy Park.
This countries peatland stores more carbon than all the the forests in the UK, France and Germany combined. We rightly regulate farming and building on peatland but the laws are considerably more lax for energy projects like windfarms. It makes no sense to strengthen our response to climate change in one area while weakening it in another. I raised this problem with the minister for energy security and net zero today.
Today the prime minister gave a statement on the UKs ongoing role in the world including talking about his proposal to renegotiate our deal with the EU.
I know from my conversations with local business including farming, manufacturing and indeed breweries that red tape is a drag on our business thriving and I pressed the prime minister on that.

Russia has intensified its strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure over the weekend. This is an attack on Ukrainian civilians, plunging them into cold and darkness. The UK strongly supports President Trump's call today for a sustained energy ceasefire to start now. I discussed this with @zelenskyyUa yesterday: Ukraine is ready if Russia stops its attacks. This is the best route to get energy and fuel back into world markets.

A very good and timely conversation with UK Prime Minister @AndyBurnham. Thank you for the support and for your condolences to all those who have lost loved ones because of Russian attacks. I briefed the Prime Minister on such Russian strikes that have continued unabated throughout the day today against various Ukrainian cities – aerial bombs, “shaheds,” ballistic missiles. Air defense is, of course, the first priority.
And, importantly, there should be real decisions to protect lives in Ukraine and to support our joint work in Europe for security. British leadership is always significant, and it matters that the UK will continue to ramp up sanctions pressure on Russia for its escalation. We discussed this and what could truly help diplomacy work. We are preparing the right joint steps and a meeting. Thank you.
Brilliant community event in Rastrick
Thank you so much to everyone who came to my community drop-in at The Space at Field Lane yesterday. It was a great turn-out and especially good to be able to create an opportunity for residents to talk directly with organisations including @WYP_Halifax and @TogetherHG . Special thanks to the brilliant team from Noah's Ark Centre charity who joined us for the first time to provide money advice and information about their free carpet and white goods schemes. They're currently fundraising and Aviva have promised to match all donations. I'll put a link in the comments in case anyone is able to support their important work.
I'd like to host more of these kind of events, let me know if you'd find it useful to have one in your area.

Robotics hub secured for Brighouse
To give our young people the best chance in life we need to give them opportunities to learn the technologies of the future. I'm delighted to say that Brighouse will soon be home to a new multi-million robotics hub, aimed at helping manufacturers explore using automation in their production processes.
Since my election I've worked closely with @WestYorksManufS , a forward-thinking charity who champion innovation and education to support local manufacturers. This new project based at their site will help drive the innovation our region is known for.
I've pushed for this investment at a regional and national level, and couldn't be more pleased with this outcome.
