Here’s several hundred words on why La La Land remains one of my favorite movies:
"Our passions give us something to aim for, even if chasing those dreams leaves us wondering about what might have been."
LA LA LAND was released almost 10 years ago! 🤯

I love it when a movie takes some risks, even if not every risk pays off. My review of JINSEI:
"It’s a singular work by a singular voice, something we frankly need more of in our contemporary art."

With THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU, I've used a word I've never used to describe a Star Wars film: boring. open.substack.com/pub/joshua…
I’ve been on a Steven Spielberg marathon the last few weeks and got to write some words on what I feel is his most challenging film:
"Even 25 years after its initial release, A.I. accurately depicts humanity’s fears in the digital age."
Our recommendation of the week is Steven Spielberg's A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE!

“SILENT LIGHT forces its audience to stare straight into the heart of grief…” my latest review:
A new 4K restoration of Carlos Reygadas's SILENT LIGHT will have its World Premiere at @FilmFestLocarno next week!
@JoshuaStevens97 reviews a "bright but dark" film that "forces its audience to stare straight into the heart of grief"!

The fact that Republicans are unfazed that Donald Trump is giving special treatment to a woman who ran this country’s most notorious pedophile ring on behalf of its most notorious serial pedophile is the latest sign of the GOP’s complete moral rot.
Read my review of this nuanced portrait of grief:
"A beautiful, layered, first step for a budding artist."

This probably doesn't come as a shock to people who know me, but I DID NOT LIKE this new, lifeless (toothless?) live action remake: joshuastevens.substack.com/p…
As always, I’m playing catch up on my reviews. Here are some quick thoughts on Materialists: joshuastevens.substack.com/p…
Why is 12 ANGRY MEN such a classic? I attempt to explain:
"It’s a classic for a reason, and it’s a film that everyone should see at least once in their life."
July's director of the month is Sidney Lumet!

“Genuine faith requires us to keep pressing on even when we feel lost, and sometimes that faith also requires personal sacrifice.” Loved getting to talk about these two movies through the lens of faith:
Wes Anderson is wrestling with God, and perhaps his own faith, in ASTEROID CITY and THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME, two of his most existential films!

F1 got a thumbs up from my dad, which is basically the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a movie (I thought it was good, too) 👍🏻
