Torn by the rivalry between two generals vying for power, much of Sudan has turned into a battleground, leading to one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. My dispatch from Sudan with photos from @HaigesVincent in @newlinesmag newlinesmag.com/reportage/su…

Pakistan claims it carried out strikes on 10 locations used to store drones in Afghanistan. The Islamic Emirate once again says those attacks led to civilian casualties. This is the second time in a single week Pakistan has been accused of killing Afghan civilians
#BREAKING Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, in reaction to last night’s airstrikes by the “Pakistani military regime” on parts of Kandahar, Paktia and Khost, condemned the attacks and said they would be responded to. He wrote on his X page that four civilians were martyred in these attacks. Mujahid described the attacks as “blatant aggression” and added that the Islamic Emirate would take a firm stance against them. He also rejected Pakistan’s claim that drones had crossed from Afghanistan and said such actions could have serious consequences. #TOLOnews_English

Keep in mind, Yemen is the poorest country in the world, dead last on the list of per capita GDP. People in Haiti are TEN TIMES richer, on average, than Yemenis. Yet in direct military confrontations, the Houthis have been defying the USA, Saudi Arabia, and Israel for 20+ years.

Astonishing read in @Newyorker The twisted logic of turning a blind eye to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza as a strategy to contain Iran? 👉 "Iran had been central to Biden’s thinking about the Middle East, several top advisers said. He’d feared that any public pressure the U.S. put on Israel—any “daylight” between the allies—could invite attacks by Iran or its Lebanese client, Hezbollah. The U.S. would then be compelled to defend Israel in a regional conflagration. Brett McGurk, Biden’s White House coördinator for the Middle East and probably his most influential adviser, championed this position" newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

The Afghan smuggler has changed. Ten years ago, he was often a broker relying on personal trust & community connections. Today, parts of those networks resemble professional criminal enterprises operating across several countries. @jb_AAN & Fabrizio Foschini explore what changed. bit.ly/4xp9OH9

What can you learn by revisiting the same households over five years? Things a snapshot never reveals. In our new report, @mvbijlert looks at how small differences in resources, opportunities & support can compound over time, sending households along very different paths. #Afghanistan bit.ly/3Rj6aPC

World Bank's data indicates that Afghanistan receives $320 million of foreign remittances annually. This makes up almost 2% of Afghanistan's GDP. These numbers are, however, underestimated because most transfers are done through hawala. The real number might be above a billion

We're hiring -- and this time in Iraq! The Iraq Initiative is hiring a full-time research fellow to help us follow events on the ground and to begin to hold events in Iraq. I encourage Iraq-based (ideally Baghdad) analysts and researchers to apply and to share in your networks. atlanticcouncil.org/job-oppo…

After another, quieter, week of layoffs impacting local staff, the Washington Post has now laid off all of its reporters who have covered Gaza full time since 2023. This is a choice about what coverage and whose voices matter.
Been laid off. Grateful for the experience, proud of my contributions giving voice to people from this part of the world, and forever cherishing the friendships I made and will never lose. Please connect with me if you think you have a suitable work opportunity for me.

Thirty-eight civil society groups issue an urgent call for international action to prevent “atrocities” as fears mount that the genocidal Rapid Support Forces, armed by the United Arab Emirates, are preparing to attack the city of el-Obeid in Sudan. trib.al/6smQloh

⭕️ NEW: A new investigation by Lighthouse Reports, Sudan War Monitor, and Evident Media alleges that the United Arab Emirates has built an extensive covert network through eastern Libya to arm, train, and supply Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), despite repeated Emirati denials. The documentary draws on more than a year of open source analysis and on the ground reporting, including rare access to the Libyan National Army (LNA), satellite imagery, social media videos, interviews with seven RSF defectors, drone footage, and geolocation analysis. Among its findings, the investigation says it identified four previously undocumented RSF training camps in Libya, documented alleged cooperation between the LNA and RSF, and found evidence that weapons, fuel, armored vehicles, and foreign military contractors moved through Libya with support from figures linked to the UAE. 🎥 Evident media (Instagram)

Three eyewitnesses told us that Pakistan used a double tap (a first strike, then a second 10 minutes apart as rescuers and residents rushed to the scene) on a building it targeted in Paktia province last night. More than 30 people died (36 per Afghanistan, 32 per Pakistan) and 160 were injured in a series of airstrikes in three provinces. nytimes.com/2026/06/29/world…

Alarming news from Afghanistan:  38 civilians, including women and children, were reportedly killed and 163 injured in last night's attacks by Pakistan on Afghanistan's Paktika, Paktia, and Kunar provinces. Civilians and civilian infrastructure must never be targeted. We urge both Pakistani and Afghan military forces to uphold international humanitarian law and work to resolve their disputes through dialogue. reuters.com/world/asia-pacif…
