Yesterday was frustrating because the Jets absolutely could have won that game. But I came away more encouraged than anything. They went on the road, banged up, and went toe to toe with Detroit. Kenyon Sadiq looks like the type of dynamic young tight end who changes offenses around the league, but somehow never here. Add him to Garrett and a hopefully not-too-banged-up Breece and that’s the kind of young offensive core Jets fans have been waiting a long time to see. So far, Geno Smith has also been everything you’d want from a veteran bridge QB and then some. And while giving up 31 points obviously isn’t something to celebrate, the defense has been way better than expected. There were breakdowns yesterday. Jahmyr Gibbs is a problem. But against one of the league’s best offenses, the defense held its own and looks night and day from where it was last year. This team is not flawless. They should easily be 2-1 and had a real chance at 3-0. The OL has questions. Special teams has been an issue. The pass rush needs to win more without blitzing. The coaching has to be better late in halves. But if the goal this year was competent, competitive football and a young foundation forming for the future, through three weeks the Jets look like that and maybe more. Anyone screaming “Same Old Jets” right now is just ignoring what’s actually happening.
