PATTERN CHANGE IN NOVEMBER
βοΈ This sunny and dry weather has made some happy, but its time will be coming to an end.
π POLR VORTEX SPLIT?
π» This is a brief look at the European Model form last night which is doubling down with the most aggressive plot for what could be an unprecedentedly early weakening of the Polar Vortex.
π This looks like a break into 3 operate arctic vortices.
This is NOT a promise of a split or arctic air for us, but it is leaning that way.
π¨ A true tell is the wind direction reversing to the East. This is briefly shown by the ECMWF.
πI need to point out that this is the standout not the standard. But this model has been consistently showing the disruption with the most dramatic results.
π Note: We do not get immediate effects here in the Eastern US. That can be delayed by weeks.. meaning mid to late November to a signal to colder.
I have often seen suggestions like this show early and get pushed back... which is why I made that call for December 5th and our first potential snow. However, we may see colder and more active weather ahead of that.
π§οΈπ¦The El NiΓ±o charged Pacific Storm Track is expected to flex its muscle and show more across the US in November..
π‘οΈ I still see November starting warm and may say warmer than average much of the month. Then colder air builds by Thanksgiving. More on that later.
So, yes! A Pattern Change Is Coming.

β°π ONE WEEK UNTIL WE FALL BACK!
Are you ready for sunsets closer to 5 PM? π
At least the sun will be rising before 7 AM againβ¦ for a few weeks! π
Next Sunday, November 1, Daylight Saving Time ends, and we return to Eastern Standard Time. At 2 AM, clocks move BACK one hour. That means an extra hour of sleep for many of us!
βοΈ Hereβs how sunrise and sunset change in Baltimore:
π
TODAY β Sunday, October 25
π
Sunrise: 7:27 AM
π Sunset: 6:14 PM
βοΈ Daylight: 10 hours, 47 minutes
π
NEXT SUNDAY β November 1
π
Sunrise: 6:34 AM
π Sunset: 5:06 PM
βοΈ Daylight: 10 hours, 32 minutes
π Thatβs a sunset 68 minutes earlier on the clock in just one week!
But hereβs something worth pointing outβ¦
β° We donβt actually lose an hour of daylight when we change the clocks. Weβre simply shifting that hour from the evening to the morning.
βοΈ The REAL loss of daylight is about 15 minutes over the week as we continue toward the Winter Solstice on December 21.
And while weβll enjoy sunrises before 7 AM again, that wonβt last long. The sun will continue rising later each morning as we head toward winter.
ποΈ WHAT ABOUT THE SUNSHINE PROTECTION ACT?
You may remember the proposal to stop changing our clocks twice a year.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act in July by a vote of 308β117.
However, the Senate has STILL not voted on it.
If approved and signed into law, the bill would make Daylight Saving Time permanent, keeping sunsets an hour later during the winter months. The trade-off would be much darker winter mornings.
For now, weβre still changing our clocks!
π NOW THE BIG QUESTION:
Would you rather haveβ¦
π
More daylight in the MORNING?
π More daylight in the EVENING?
β° Or would you simply prefer to stop changing the clocks twice a year?
Iβm curious where everyone stands on this!

πβοΈ POLAR VORTEX WEAKENING: Pattern Change Begins In November AND THEN Support for My First Snowfall Call In Early December:
π€ I Geeked Out A Little Here...
Something unusual is developing nearly 20 miles above the Arctic, and the latest European and American models are showing a significant disruption of the Polar Vortex in early November!
π THE CHANGE: The Polar Vortex should be strengthening this time of year. Instead, models show significant weakening around November 4β6.
β³ THE DELAY: It can take 1β3 weeks or longer for a weakened Polar Vortex to influence the jet stream and potentially push colder air into eastern North America.
βοΈ MY FIRST SNOW CALL: December 5, give or take 4β6 days. The timing of this disturbance offers possible support for that early-December window!
π EL NIΓO: A potentially active southern storm track could add another ingredient, IF we get the cold air.
β οΈ NOT A GUARANTEE: A weaker Polar Vortex does not automatically mean cold or snow in Maryland.
π NEW FULL REPORT: I break down the latest model maps, what similar winters produced in Baltimore, and why this development has my attention.

π±π§ DROUGHT MONITOR & LAWN HEALTH INDEX UPDATE | OCTOBER 22
Our lawns are holding up well as the growing season winds down, but the dry weather pattern and persistent rainfall deficit remain concerns.
πΊοΈ DROUGHT MONITOR: NO CHANGE
The latest map shows essentially no change across Maryland.
Abnormally Dry and Moderate Drought conditions remain across portions of our region.
Recent rainfall has helped our lawns, but the longer-term moisture deficit remains substantial.
π LAWN HEALTH INDEX: 67/100 β GOOD
β¬οΈ Down 1 point from last week.
π± WHY THE SMALL DROP?
Fall temperatures continue to favor Central Marylandβs cool-season grasses, including Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass.
Weβve already experienced the first frost of the season in some inland locations, although areas closer to the Chesapeake Bay have remained warmer.
But rainfall has become limited again, and there is NO SIGNIFICANT RAIN IN THE FORECAST!
π§ RAINFALL UPDATE AT BWI
β’ October: 2.61β β 0.12β BELOW average
β’ Since September 1: 5.86β β 1.31β BELOW average
β’ 2026: 31.96β β 4.99β BELOW average
β’ Since January 1, 2024: 21.90β BELOW average!
BWI received another 0.52β of rain since last weekβs report. However, the annual deficit increased from 4.62β to 4.99β because rainfall did not keep pace with the normal accumulation.
βοΈ WEATHER OUTLOOK: SUNNY β’ SEASONABLE β’ DRY
π‘οΈ Temperatures near seasonal averages, with most afternoons in the 60s.
βοΈ Plenty of sunshine.
π§ No significant rainfall in sight.
The cooler temperatures are beneficial for established lawns, but continued dry weather may limit additional improvement.
π± LAWN DOCTOR TIP OF THE WEEK: PUT YOUR YARD TO BED!
As the growing season winds down, itβs time to prepare your lawn and equipment for winter.
βοΈ Keep mowing while the grass is growing. Tall Fescue generally slows considerably as soil temperatures approach 50Β°F.
π§ Reduce watering. Cooler temperatures lower water demand, but newly seeded lawns may still need supplemental moisture during prolonged dry periods.
π° Disconnect garden hoses and properly winterize irrigation systems before freezing temperatures arrive.
π Prepare your mower for winter. Clean the deck, follow the manufacturerβs fuel-storage recommendations, and store it in a properly ventilated garage or shed.
π A little winter preparation now can save you headaches next spring!
π± THE BOTTOM LINE: Our lawns remain in GOOD condition thanks to the fall growing season, but the dry weather pattern and persistent rainfall deficit are keeping the Lawn Health Index from climbing higher.
