What a day…
So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

🚨 Heads-up for anyone running PHP: two critical RCE bugs, patch drops tomorrow.
The PHP project has confirmed an emergency security release for two critical remote code execution vulnerabilities: CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, both rated CVSS v4.0 9.2.
📅 Patch lands Wednesday, Oct 21 at 14:00 UTC (9:00 AM Central). PHP has reserved the right to ship it earlier if details leak or exploitation shows up.
PHP runs about 75% of the web, including WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Laravel, Magento, and countless custom apps. If you operate a PHP server, this is your weekend-ruiner unless you act.
Here's the part the big threat-intel shops aren't shouting about:
No official technical details are public yet. But based on my own source-code analysis of php-src, my best assessment (moderate confidence, NOT officially confirmed) is that the vulnerable path is PHP's session.upload_progress / multipart form-data (rfc1867) handling:
🔹 Present since PHP 5.4
🔹 Enabled by default (the compiled-in default is On; the sample php.ini ships it commented out, so stock installs have it live)
🔹 Processes uploaded request data before any of your application code runs, so it's reachable pre-authentication on a default config
That lines up exactly with the public breadcrumbs: "affects default installs," "every version since 5.x," "fires before user code." Treat it as a working hypothesis, not gospel. The official advisory supersedes all of this when it lands.
✅ What to do right now:
1. Inventory your PHP. Know every host and version (php -v). Anything on PHP 7.x or older won't get a fix, so plan to upgrade.
2. Apply the stopgap (best-intel, low-risk, reversible). In php.ini / .user.ini / .htaccess:
session.upload_progress.enabled = Off
Reload PHP-FPM or your web server. My analysis says this closes one of the two likely paths.
3. Clamp multipart uploads at the edge. The second likely path lives in the multipart parser itself, which runs for any multipart/form-data POST regardless of the setting above. If you've got a WAF or reverse proxy, tighten inspection or rate-limit multipart POSTs to endpoints that don't need uploads. This is the same network-layer mitigation the enterprise vendors are quietly deploying for their paying customers.
4. Patch the second it drops. Current stable: 8.5.11 / 8.4.26 / 8.3.35 / 8.2.34. If your hosting is managed, confirm your provider's timeline today.
Why I'm posting this for free:
A pre-patch mitigation shouldn't be a subscription perk. I'm a one man shop, and the orgs most likely to get burned in the gap between leak and patch are the small teams without an enterprise threat intel contract. The steps above cost nothing. Spend tonight reducing risk, not tomorrow doing incident response.
I'll follow up once the official advisory publishes and confirm whether my root cause read was right.
Stay patched. 🔒

DesignSetGo 2.10 is out, and it's mostly forms.
Split long forms into steps, show a field only when an earlier answer calls for it, send submissions to Zapier or Make, and export them to CSV.
Plus per-device layout controls for Section, Row and Grid.

The benchmark also analyzes every run: why agents passed on WordPress, and what they built instead. Then it makes project recommendations for what could change the result.
It runs every month so we'll get to see what moves the number.

Been working on the Claude connector path in DesignSetGo Apps.
You can describe a small app in a chat, preview it, then choose whether to install it on WordPress. It’s best for things you can get right in one conversation, like a booking form or a content widget.
I wrote up the setup and where I’d switch over to the CLI instead:

Trying an Astro frontend with WordPress still running the CMS on a side project.
So far I like it. I get the frontend flexibility without turning content updates into a code task.
Still figuring out the cleanest divide between WordPress edits and code changes. That line gets messy pretty quickly.
DesignSetGo 2.7 is out.
I went a little overboard on this one.
New charts, hotspots, text paths, animated headlines, off-canvas panels, and more. The things I’m most excited about are the new interactions system and Woo product filters that can drive a custom query loop.
Charts are plain SVG with a screen-reader data table, and we also knocked out a bunch of annoying slider edge cases.

Vibe coding gets you a polished prototype fast. The harder part is the runtime: what the app can access, how it fits on a WordPress site, and what happens when it breaks.
That’s the gap I’m trying to bridge with DesignSetGo Apps. Build in Claude, ChatGPT, Lovable, or wherever you work, then ship to WordPress as a sandboxed app with permissioned access to the data it needs.
Early, but it’s starting to feel like a better path from prompt to production for small tools.

Keep your eyes open for this hat if you’re looking to talk about ecommerce, development, AI workflows, or just want to say “Hi!”
Good ol' Arizona :D
If anybody’s still packing for #WCUS, do yourself a favor and bring a sweatshirt or something. I know what the forecast says about outside, but the convention center runs about 60 degrees 🥶
#WCUS is already here. Looking forward to seeing folks next week 👋

A few years ago at WordCamp Phoenix, we wandered into Cobra Arcade Bar and thought, “This would be a great place for an official unofficial WordCamp party.”
This year, we’re making it happen. 🕹️
