We learnt today, via comments made by Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall to the BBC, that the government plans to trial job coaches visiting ‘seriously ill patients’ on mental health wards. (Thread - 1/4) bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c98y…

They have far too much to hide! I am with you all the way @HopeVirgo and will not stop until they are clinically held to account and routinely inspected. @NHSE @DHSCgovuk it’s time you listened to the voices who are speaking out!
If there is nothing to hide within eating disorder services, I don’t know why the complaints procedure cannot be reviewed when we all know the current one isn’t fit for purpose.

The emails I am receiving after this call out are harrowing - how people with eating disorders are being treated is neglectful, harmful, dangerous and causing deaths. And the fact that @NHSEngland don’t think there is a problem and this isn’t a “national issue” is disgusting
If you have had your treatment for an eating disorder withdrawn in the last 2-3 years please email me on [email protected] Thank you!

This is something that I raise time and time again with @NHSEngland … their response 1. There is a complaints procedure to follow and 2. Local issues are not national ones … 2 disgraceful responses!
The lack of clinical accountability of community Eating Disorder Services is a national scandal. It is aiding the cover-up of unnecessary deaths of Eating Disorder patients which are not recorded as such. @HopeVirgo

🧵This thread gives some of the impossible paradoxes I have experienced when asking for help with an eating disorder. Can anyone add any others?

But the NHS HAS been broken lol. And it’s being continuously broken. Why are NHS management so worried about accepting that? Oh that’s right because they enabled it 👏🏽… 👏🏽… 👏🏽

It’s time that community Eating Disorder services came under the same sort of scrutiny as other parts of the NHS and public sector. The majority of community ED services have NEVER been inspected!! @HopeVirgo
It would be amazing to get to 1000 on day 1! change.org/p/avoidable-death…

For too long, those affected by eating disorders have faced neglect & injustice, leading to avoidable deaths. This is why I am asking you to join me &sign the petition calling for a Confidential Inquiry into eating disorder deaths - change.org/p/avoidable-death…

There is no accountability. Complaints always side with the Trust because it’s the Trust investigating the complaint. They cover for each other and make sure notes make it clear that it’s not them! I would love to know who makes the final judgement.

Last week @NHSEngland said they had a complaints procedure for eating disorder services … I said it didn’t work… they said it was “the procedure they had developed” .. I argued back .. they stuck with the party line of “procedure” So can someone explain the below to me ..

We will not make progress with the big issues in eating disorders until we start being frank about the widespread and profound medical neglect that patients experience.

Disengagement is often on the side of treatment providers who discharge patients in dire need & have such high bars to accessing care that even severely unwell people have no support whatsoever. The system is broken. For most people it provides abuse in the form of neglect.
Our study of homicide by patients with schizophrenia. Two factors stand out: alcohol/drug misuse & disengagement. 94% of cases had one or both. Conclusions: These 2 factors are key to prevention. Without them, these tragedies are rare. @NCISH_UK cambridge.org/core/journals/…

… saying they can’t do anything unless she chooses to engage! Eating disorders are NOT choice and if it was as simple as choosing to engage or choosing to eat then no one would need treatment!

Monday morning. First email I open from a parent.. their child discharged from eating disorder services because they “aren’t engaging” in therapy .. .. parent made a complaint locally and followed the exact procedure to do this … local area still blaming patient …

Replying to @gann_will
I can't even begin to explain what dangerous&misguided advice this is for an eating disorder psychiatrist to be giving out 🤦‍♀️ Also there are multiple reasons for hypokalemia in ED's - that require medical monitoring and often urgent treatment @AgnesAyton @jamesldowns @HopeVirgo
