One of my absolutely favorite sites I dug at! The history surrounding this location as a major stop along the Santa Fe Trail was (and still is) fascinating. Here is 13 year old me cleaning artifacts in the lab, as well as a photo showing more of the excavation!
At KATP 2016, participants dug at the Last Chance Store in Council Grove, Kansas in the yard surrounding the structure, in the cellar, and underneath the floorboards! Notice the hand hewn logs with the bark still attached on the supports after the floor was removed.

At the end of an archaeological excavation, the next step is to backfill all of the units! At the Kansas Archaeological Training Program, we have a tradition of all signing a broken bucket and burying it in the units for future archaeologists to find! Photos are from KATP 2023.

Throwback to KATP 2017 where some participants got to excavate a 1000 to 1500 year old roasting pit! Hundreds of burnt rocks were laid on top of a thick layer of firewood and used to cook food, the fully excavated feature is amazing to see!

Good morning everyone! I may or may not have dug this unit with my buddy Mike😁 We excavated pretty quickly even though it was almost entirely rubble. Even though we’ve been friends for over a decade, this was the first time we were in a unit together, made quite the team!
Throwback to KATP 2025 where KAA member Mike uncovered the floor of a basement in a house built in the Bleeding Kansas period! The floor was made of limestone laid directly on the bedrock with mortar filling the cracks.

After each 10 centimeter level in an excavation unit is completed, the next step before a new level is started or backfilling begins is to map the floor of the unit. Here are some example floor maps from KATP 2025 and 2023 (blue dot in first two images denotes a rock on the map)

Another #throwbackthursday post to KATP 2003 in Wabaunsee County, Kansas. Some participants had to paddle to and from an excavation location in a creek bank. This exclusive club called themselves the “Mill Creek Yaut Club”, looks like they had lots of fun!

Some more pictures showing KAA member Dave kayaking a full load of floatation sample bags back across the creek, and Nancy in the excavation units at the “Yaut Club”

Throwback Thursday to the 2004 Kansas Archaeology Training Program at Lindsborg Kansas. How many archaeologists does it take to set up a tent? (More than you would expect🤣) #throwbackthursday

Throwback to the 2005 KATP near Kanorado in Sherman County! Check out this profile of paleolithic-age soil! The profile of the block on the right shows evidence of an ancient soil slump that partially filled an even older gully.
