There is a reason why the Assamese opposed the CAA. It will not be long before Bihu is reduced to just another festival in Assam to accommodate a “forced” and one-way fraternity.
The news of an attack on a Bihu troupe in Sribhumi is deeply disturbing and unfortunate. Bihu is the soul of Assam, our pride and our identity. We will never tolerate any insult to our culture and heritage. I have directed the @DGPAssamPolice to ensure immediate action against those responsible.

In this video I explain how Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma scripted a BJP victory in a constituency where there were nearly 13 lakh Muslim voters compared to nearly 7 lakh Hindu voters. This is a case study in election management and planning. After the 2023 delimitation turned Nagaon into a clear Muslim-majority Lok Sabha seat, a BJP win looked improbable. Yet Devasish Sharma (former IAS officer and popular district administrator) won by roughly 1.4 lakh votes over AIUDF’s Badruddin Ajmal, with Congress pushed to a distant third. The margin came from deliberate preparation, not accident. Sarma had placed Sharma as Nagaon Commissioner well before the bypoll so he could deliver welfare schemes across communities and build personal goodwill. The campaign stayed deliberately low-key to avoid reverse polarisation among Muslim voters, while Hindu votes consolidated tightly. Ajmal’s late entry split the opposition, and the by-election nature lowered the usual ideological stakes. Sarma has long treated election management as a craft, learning from past setbacks, choosing the right candidate for the terrain, and combining delivery, organisation, and timing. Nagaon shows how that approach can produce results even against heavy demographic odds. youtu.be/_F--o8kha-g?si=FNpL…

Himanta Biswa Sarma once again shows why he is a maverick of election management. In Nagaon, a Lok Sabha constituency where Muslims outnumber Hindus two to one, he manages to secure a BJP victory. It’s a case study in how to plan well in advance for a seemingly impossible victory and tailor the strategy to the constituency’s unique political realities. And yes, he plans strategies for his adversaries too. @himantabiswa #Nagaon bypoll

The most expensive part of a hospital bill may never touch the hospital at all. A patient admitted for care has no way of knowing whether the price on a medical consumable reflects its actual cost or a markup fixed long before it ever reached the ward. That gap in information is, at its core, a public health issue. A survey of hospital consumables in Maharashtra found an IV infusion set with a trade price of ₹11.05 carrying a printed MRP of ₹325 ; a markup of 2,841%. A syringe procured at ₹6.75 carried an MRP of ₹57.20. A catheter procured at ₹29.41 carried an MRP of ₹310. These are not elective purchases. Patients cannot compare prices, seek alternatives, or question a number printed on a box while receiving care and the MRP itself is often fixed upstream by manufacturers and distributors, disconnected from the trade price by a wide, unexplained margin. The result is a system where the party bearing the cost has the least information to evaluate it. The regulatory gap is structural: scheduled medicines are capped under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. Most medical devices and consumables are not leaving both the pricing and the information around it almost entirely unmonitored. A review of these findings and clear guidelines on the permissible gap between trade procurement price and declared MRP have been recommended to the Department of Pharmaceuticals and the NPPA ; a step toward closing not just a pricing gap, but the information gap patients are left to bear alone. #PublicHealth #GoodGovernance #Leadership #TukaramMundhe moneycontrol.com/news/busine…

Who says minorities are in trouble in India? In fact, they are only representing the country. Otherwise, what justifies this vegetarian show off in a country with 70 per cent population that consumes non-veg. How will a vegetarian feel if he is invited somewhere where only non-veg is served?
National and international media covering the BRICS Summit are being served only vegetarian food for lunch. For LIVE updates👇🏼 indianexpress.com/article/in…

The killing of the 54-year-old Manipuri musician fills me with sadness and outrage at the racist remarks and prejudice people from the Northeast still face. My husband and I worked in Manipur, and I later accompanied him during his posting in Arunachal Pradesh. Those years left me with deep affection and respect for the people of the Northeast. I was especially struck by the absence of class consciousness and the warmth, efficiency and dignity I encountered in offices, homes and hospitals. Even today, visits to Munirka Urban Village remind me how far many people from the Northeast have come to study and work—and how unacceptable it is that their appearance, food, accent or origins should invite ridicule or abuse. India cannot celebrate its diversity while treating some citizens as outsiders. Racist remarks must stop, and prejudice that turns violent demands an unequivocal response. My deepest condolences to his son, family and friends.

We spend our lives proving we don’t need anyone. “I’ll manage.” “Don’t bother.” But there’s something called the Benjamin Franklin Effect: doing someone a favour can actually make us feel closer to them. So let your mother send the pickle. Let your father give you the money. Let your friend buy you the book. People who love us just want to matter in our small moments. Let them. ❤️

Mr Sinha, I work for India Today and did not see any of these covers. Thanks for inventing these covers. But please use a proper logo. This is an old typeface and we have not used it in more than 10 years.

IMPORTANT: A fresh row over press freedom has emerged in Assam after reporters from Aaj Tak and India Today were denied entry to the Assembly despite having official passes. With no explanation from the Assembly authorities, the move has raised more questions than answers. @himantabiswa @KDscribe indiatodayne.in/assam/story/…

Assam is drowning, and this time, the floods have brought unimaginable pain. More than 60 people are dead, over seven lakh lives have been shattered, homes and villages have disappeared under muddy water, and children are growing up in relief camps after losing almost everything. This is not just another monsoon flood, but a frightening disaster made worse by relentless rain, overflowing rivers, climate change and damage to the hills and forests upstream. Watch this special report by India Today NE to understand why Assam’s floods turned so deadly, and why the next disaster could be even worse. youtu.be/1ATgi_spW5s

Journalists and astrologers have one thing in common: they try to figure out future events. The difference is how they get there. Curious but sceptical, I sat down with one of India’s most talked-about astrologers, @AstroSharmistha, whose recent political predictions have, at times, proved more accurate than those of some psephologists. Is it intuition, sharp observation, coincidence, or a rigorous method? I put her claims to the test, challenged her process, and asked her to predict the political future of some of India’s biggest leaders. She didn’t hold back. Some of her forecasts are surprisingly unkind and a few are likely to ruffle powerful feathers. Watch this fun conversation with Astro Sharmistha. youtu.be/ZY4I7JMgq0s?si=W5XS…
