When suffering is met with love, it can become hope. And when compassion becomes action, it can transform lives.
Today, Bal Ashram welcomed H.E. Mr. João Ribeiro de Almeida, Ambassador of Portugal to India, H.E. Mr. Pérez Ramos, Consul General of Mexico, Spanish author Javier Moro, and 30 Mexican nationals, whose presence made this coming together of cultures especially meaningful.
The day brought powerful reflections on the transformative power of compassion, dignity and opportunity.
Mohit, a Bal Ashram alumnus who once grazed goats, shared how his life changed after coming to the Ashram. From scoring 83% in Class 10 to topping his Class 12 examinations, he is now pursuing his graduation.
Author Javier Moro, who has spent much of his life in India, described Bal Ashram as a “place of the soul” — where children who once knew fear have found love, support and confidence. He reflected on the meaning of compassion: seeing a child in chains and thinking of that child as your own.
H.E. Mr. João Ribeiro de Almeida, who has visited Bal Ashram multiple times, said “At Bal Ashram, I met children who have come out of the darkest circumstances and have found purpose and meaning in life.”
"We are all co-marchers in the path to globalising compassion. Let us walk together so that no one if left behind," said SMGC Founders, Nobel Peace Laureate Shri @k_satyarthi and Mrs. @sumedhakailash.
The day came to a close with a deeply interesting interaction between the two dignitaries and The Satyarthi Fellows. Working in conflict zones, what makes for a good leader, the need for multilateralism – the Fellows came out enriched and inspired.
This gathering was a reminder that when we come together, we can turn suffering into hope and build a just, equitable, peaceful and sustainable world.
Compassion knows no borders. It brings us together, and it moves us to act.

Happy wedding anniversary to our beloved founders, Shri @k_satyarthi and Mrs @sumedhakailash — partners in life, and in a mission that has spanned 48 years.
It began with a conviction: no child should be denied freedom and education. Stepping fearlessly into the darkest corners together, united by courage and compassion, they built a movement that has gone on to free more than 1,38,000 children from child labour and the worst forms of exploitation.
48 years. One shared mission. A lifetime of steadfast devotion to justice, human dignity, and the transformative power of compassion.
The #SMGC family wishes our Maata and Bhaisaab endless joy, good health, and continued strength in inspiring millions across the globe.

For Satyarthi Fellow Amanda da Cruz Costa, the visit to the Banjara Education Centre became a powerful reminder of the importance of listening, connection and staying open to learning.
“We need to be very humble to take out all of our stereotypes and bias and just listen to the community,” she reflected.
At the school, the children’s energy left her inspired — from trying to speak English to teaching the Fellows how to write in Hindi and communicate. A simple game brought everyone together, reminding Amanda that when we are close to nature and children, “we come back to our inner child.”
What stayed with her was a deeper sense of responsibility: “It’s just one planet. Even though we are from different countries, we need to stay connected, we need to stay together and we can transform the world.”
A day of listening, learning and rediscovering the power of connection.

What does compassion look like when it becomes a way of life?
The Satyarthi Fellows experienced it firsthand as they visited SMGC’s Compassionate Communities.
For @DinahAchola from Uganda, her visit to the Banjara community in Rajasthan offered a powerful answer.
Reflecting on her experience, Dinah said she was struck by the “power of collective leadership and what can change when the people closest to the problems are involved.”
She saw young people taking on leadership, communities creating their own solutions, and people taking “full responsibility and charge” of their growth and development.
What moved her most was seeing children being reintegrated into school and beginning to dream bigger. “I can’t wait to see this evidence in like 20 years’ time,” she shared, imagining these children graduating from college, entering government roles, becoming doctors and creating solutions from within their own communities.
For Dinah, the visit was a living example of collective leadership, human-centred design, and of what becomes possible when communities are empowered to shape their own futures.

At five, I asked a cobbler why his son sat outside my school instead of inside.
He folded his hands and said, "Babuji, you are born to go to school. We are born to work."
I cried. I refused to accept it. That was my first spark of compassion.
Nobody taught it to me. It was already there. It is in every one of us.
But compassion is not a soft emotion. Kindness cannot free a child from slavery. Mercy cannot end caste. These injustices are built into systems, and they need a force.
Compassion is that force: disruptive, dynamic, transformative. It is feeling another's problem as your own, and acting to solve it.
That is what I shared today at SALA 2026 with my brother @VRFerose and the South Asian community of San Francisco. Thank you for your warmth and your questions.
The spark is within you. Don't let it go out.

We welcome the commitments by Google, and Meta to report suspected child sexual abuse content involving #India directly to Indian Authorities. When a child may be in danger, every avoidable delay carries a human cost.
This is what our call for Compassionate Technology and Compassionate AI is: we must recognise harm, act with urgency, and make someone accountable.
We urge that these channels be made operational without delay, and that other platforms follow.
But a report is only the beginning. What matters is whether the child in that material is found and protected, whether the content stops circulating, whether survivors receive trauma-informed care, and whether abusers face justice. That depends on Indian agencies having the specialised capacity to act on what they receive, and on children's data being handled with the utmost care.
Such measures must not be afterthoughts.Technology companies must build child safety into the design of their platforms and AI systems rather than respond after harm is done, especially as AI-generated abuse material grows.

"If not you, then who?"
That was the simple challenge I posed when opening applications for The Satyarthi Fellowship. Over 1,200 brilliant youth from 35 countries responded, and we proudly selected 25.
Filled with unprecedented energy, courage, and conviction, these young change-makers are currently gathered at Balashram for intense, transformative discussions.
During a deep conversation on self-compassion, one of the fellows asked me a profound question:
"I always struggle to know who I am. What do you think of yourself?"
I told them: This is one of the oldest questions among thinkers and philosophers. But at my core, I feel that I am simply one of the eight and a half billion people on this planet. That is the real me. Everything else is just an identity imposed upon me or born out of ego.
Stripping away our labels allows us to connect deeply with our shared humanity—and that is where true compassion begins.

“Compassion is not about how deeply we feel about a problem. It is about what we choose to do because we feel it.”
HRH Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck, Princess of Bhutan and President, JSW School of Law, shared this powerful message with the inaugural cohort of the Satyarthi Fellowship.
Reflecting on her journey with Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, she highlighted what his work has always demonstrated: change happens one child, one family, one broken system at a time.
For the 25 Fellows beginning this journey, her message was clear: lead differently. Turn compassion into choices, action and change.

With AI having become the frontline of an intense global competition for economic and geopolitical power, speed is rewarded, scale is celebrated, and market dominance is prized above all else.
Under such conditions, we risk forgetting the most important question: Whom is this intelligence ultimately meant to serve?
Nobel Peace Laureate and #SMGC Founder @k_satyarthi answers this essential question in an Op-Ed for @ProSyn.

We were honoured to welcome Dr. Oleksandr Polishchuk, Ambassador of Ukraine to India, for a meeting with our Founder, Nobel Peace Laureate Mr. @k_satyarthi. They had a meaningful dialogue on protecting children affected by armed conflict and the urgent need for compassion in today's times.
With more than 520 million children living in conflict zones around the world, Mr. Satyarthi reiterated that children must never pay the price of wars and conflicts. He also emphasised that compassion is the transformative force that can advance Justice, Equality, Peace, and Sustainability (JEPS) in the world.
The Ambassador shared the humanitarian situation in Ukraine and highlighted initiatives led by the President and First Lady of Ukraine to support children affected by the war. Mr. Satyarthi appreciated Ukraine's efforts to safeguard children's safety, well-being, and education under these extraordinarily difficult circumstances.
Mr. Satyarthi and Dr. Polishchuk reaffirmed their strong support that peace is the only solution to the development and growth of all countries.

Something shifted yesterday.
At the @WSISprocess Forum 2026 in Geneva, Compassionate AI stepped onto the world stage.
There was a High-Level Dialogue hosted by #SMGC at the International Telecommunication Union ‘s forum — ‘Beyond Ethics and Regulation: Compassionate AI for a Just and Sustainable World’.
Nobel Peace Laureate @k_satyarthi sat with @tlamanauskas, Deputy Secretary-General of @ITU; @gabramosp; Amir Banifatemi , Chief Responsible AI Officer at Cognizant; Howie Wachtel, who leads UN and International Organizations Policy at Microsoft .
What emerged was refreshingly practical. Compassionate AI is not a philosophy to admire from a distance. It is a design question: are AI systems built with an approach to ensure human dignity, safety and environmental sustainability- or are these mere afterthoughts?
Industry has a decisive role here — not as an afterthought consulted once the rules are written, but as a partner in shaping standards it can genuinely implement.
That is why voices from Microsoft and Cognizant mattered in this room. Good intentions that can’t be engineered stay intentions.
And we were honest about what isn’t working. The race to build faster, dominate markets, and ‘win’ AI has not produced technology the world trusts. Speed is not the same as progress. A different measure is possible - and today, we started building it together.
Thanks Scott Cunningham for moderating this panel.
