Leadership is hard and it’s especially tough in Public Defense spaces where caseloads are excessive, and resources are inadequate. But I’ve got so much optimism about the future of KS public defense thanks to a state full of such great leaders and mentors!

Wrapping up the Midwest conference on Legal Deserts. I’ve loved meeting so many colleagues from other Midwest states with great ideas! But the best part has been the great, practical convos with this group of KS leaders about what we can do to provide better access to justice!

I presented today on our efforts to address criminal defense attorney shortages at the Natl Ctr for State Cts Midwest Summit on Legal Deserts today. (And clearly need to work on being less animated when I speak! 😂😜). 1/3

We are experiencing severe shortages of legal counsel across KS, particularly in rural communities. These shortages are very problematic for our adult felony criminal cases where the provision of counsel is constitutionally required by the 6th Amendment. 2/3

.@TheKLC did a great job describing challenges created when there are too few attorneys in rural communities, an issue being examined by the Kansas Rural Justice Initiative Committee. #KSCourts
