Will there be a Jamaican presence at COP31 in Turkey? We’ll see.
🔘 UPDATE: Why Jamaica is banning official overseas travel It all comes down to money! Jamaica's Cabinet Secretary, Audrey Sewell, has issued a memorandum to the Financial Secretary and Permanent Secretaries explaining the rationale for the immediate ban on official overseas travel. "Government must lead by example in demonstrating prudence, restraint and an unwavering commitment to directing scarce public resources towards the country's most urgent priorities," she wrote. ▫️ Sewell said the unprecedented destruction caused by Hurricane Melissa has placed enormous pressure on Jamaica's financial resources and public sector capacity, declaring that the country is now at a "critical juncture", requiring the Government to exercise the "highest degree of fiscal discipline". ▫️ She said Ministers and senior public officials must remain firmly focused on national reconstruction, economic recovery and the effective delivery of public services. ▫️ The ban applies across the public sector, regardless of whether travel is funded by taxpayers or external organisations. It takes immediate effect and will remain in place until March 31, 2027. ▫️Overseas travel may only be permitted with written prior approval for post-Melissa reconstruction and recovery, national security, approved board meetings, essential tourism promotion and genuine emergencies of compelling national importance.

BREAKING: Trump's head of FEMA just told states to prepare to handle disasters on their own. The Trump admin's disaster chief told state officials they must increase their financial reserves and emergency capabilities to handle most disasters on their own — without federal help. politico.com/news/2026/10/20…

One of the more complicated tectonic boundaries on Earth, the Caribbean has much to teach us. The recent Mw7.2 and Mw7.5 earthquakes in Venezuela mark the activity of this region. The USGS just released a new informational map on the Seismotectonics of the Caribbean, a region characterized by an extensive diversity of tectonic regimes along its perimeter, involving five major plates. Each tectonic boundary is associated with a distinctive pattern of earthquakes, volcanoes, and surface expression. Inclined zones of deep earthquakes, ocean trenches, and volcanic arcs indicate subduction of oceanic lithosphere. Narrow bands of crustal seismicity reflect transform fault tectonics. Oblique continental collision produces broad, diffuse zones of crustal earthquakes across mountainous regions. Pull-apart basin tectonics are reflected in patterns of extensional earthquakes and low-lying basins lying between generally parallel adjacent faults. Which of these tectonic settings is acting at a given point in the Caribbean region depends on the direction of relative plate motion across the boundary and the tectonic nature of the interacting plates. geonarrative.usgs.gov/earthq… 📸: Screenshot of front page of our story map.

Grand Theft Auto VI is bringing meteorological realism to gaming with dynamic severe weather across the fictional state of Leonida. Players will have to navigate extreme hazards like hurricanes and tropical storms that directly impact the game's environment and mechanics. This next-generation weather tech promises to closely mirror the real-life volatile climate of its Florida-inspired setting.

The dignity we want for ourselves must be the dignity we demand for everybody. That is the conviction Barbados brings to the world. Solidarity means coming together. Justice means being fair. Thank you, Mayor @ZohranKMamdani, for your generous words and for bringing us together to put those values to work. As for the cricket lessons, those must happen in Barbados!

My expectation for Hurricane Polo to undergo an "extreme intensification rate" was met - and then exceeded. In just 42 hours, Polo went from a tropical depression to a category 5 hurricane - the fastest in modern records (1970-present) in both the Atlantic & East Pacific.
Hurricane Polo continues to rapidly improve in structure, with an eye clearing out on visible satellite & two vortical hot towers rotating around its nascent small eyewall. Combined with ambient moisture, very high SST & low shear, an extreme intensification rate is imminent.

I've updated my map of El Niño impacts this year to incorporate 13 dynamical models (NMME and C3S, Sept runs); the initial version was simply based on an assessment of the impacts literature for past very strong events. This also let me refine the impacted areas using the model fields:
