Africa has a population of approximately 1.6 billion people, representing an immense market for goods produced and manufactured on our continent. We must strategically harness this opportunity by strengthening intra-African trade, building regional value chains, and ensuring that African enterprises benefit more from the goods and services we produce.
During the Kenya activation and stakeholder launch of Trade Roots Africa at the Africa Commerce & Industry Summit (ACIS) 2026, I urged neighbouring countries to increasingly become leading trading partners, complementing each other's competitive advantages and production capacities. Trade Roots Africa is an initiative designed to connect Kenyan MSMEs to markets across the African continent.
This initiative complements our mandate at the State Department for MSME Development to expand market access for our enterprises at the local, regional, and international levels. It will support businesses through six critical pillars: export readiness, trade rules and compliance, trade finance, logistics and customs, digital trade, and mentorship and market acceleration.
Digital platforms offer the required pathway for overcoming geographical barriers, connecting buyers and sellers, and opening new markets. Equally, clustering MSMEs will enable enterprises to aggregate their production, achieve economies of scale, improve product quality, and fulfil larger market orders. Further, we need to address barriers to finance, information, skills, and market access to enable more MSMEs to participate in cross-border trade.
As Kenya prepares to participate in the 26th EAC MSME Trade Fair in Kigali, Rwanda, from 30th October to 8th November 2026, we are ensuring that our enterprises are positioned to establish lasting business relationships and secure sustainable markets across the region.

The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Environment and Climate Change, @Eng_F_Ngeno, has called on both public institutions and private sector organizations to embrace sustainability reporting, describing it as a critical tool for strengthening resilience, enhancing competitiveness and driving long-term success.
Speaking during the launch of @KenGenKenya's inaugural Sustainability Report at Amani Grounds in Karura Forest, Dr. Ng'eno said sustainability reporting has become an essential pillar of good governance and sound business management as consumers increasingly favour organizations that demonstrate environmental responsibility.
"The future belongs to organizations that are transparent, accountable and committed to sustainable practices. Sustainability reporting is no longer optional it is a strategic necessity that builds trust and creates long-term value," he said.
The PS noted that KenGen is uniquely positioned to support Kenya's ambition of becoming Africa's green industrial hub through its leadership in renewable energy and sustainable business practices. He commended the company for integrating Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles into its corporate strategy, describing the inaugural Sustainability Report as a strong demonstration of responsible corporate leadership that extends beyond the energy sector.
Dr. Ng'eno reaffirmed the Government's commitment to creating an enabling environment that promotes innovation, climate resilience, green finance, circular economy principles and sustainable investment. He urged organizations across all sectors to embed sustainability into their operations and institutional culture, emphasizing that such efforts are essential for safeguarding the environment while securing economic prosperity for future generations.
