A frank and productive exchange of views with my counterpart on key issues like expanding the global supply of candy and toys and tightening sanctions against chores.

BIG TAB: Trump's tax-cut proposals could collectively cost more than combined budgets of every domestic federal agency. Great @elwasson @endacurran deep dive via @bpolitics bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

It’s very hard to sum up all that ⁦@paulwsj⁩ has done for Evan. He’s one of the real heroes behind the scenes. But what he’s done for the rest of us is allow us to confidently carry on with our jobs knowing that someone has our back, especially if things go wrong. Thank you

The journalistic justification for speaking to Trump is pretty clear to me, especially given signs more black voters are supporting him. That rise in support is largely tied to economics, and so I hope there are VERY substantive questions about employment, tariffs, the Fed, etc.
🟥 Former U.S. President Donald J. Trump will participate in a conversation with journalists at #NABJ24 during its opening day in Chicago on Wednesday, July 31, at noon CST. For more details: bit.ly/NABJ24ConversationWit…

Amid reported Trump Team dollar devaluation calls, some argue depreciation is in store & will provide vindication. While "devaluation" & "depreciation" entail a lower $, they are different concepts w different ramifications. Devalution is injurious. 👇 omfif.org/2024/07/dont-confu…

Donald Trump wants to be a weak-dollar president, but he’s running on a strong-dollar platform - at least that's what Wall St thinks I break down a Trump-Vance admin's options to weaken the dollar, and how markets would view it all, w/ @hcarterjohnson bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

It's well known that lower income people tend to suffer much worse health. Is poverty at the heart of this disparity, and, if so, could a large cash transfer help close this gap? We examine an RCT that provided 1000 low income participants $1000/month for 3 years. We find…

An important message from my old friend and colleague who ran the BLS a few years ago. The way to cut the deficit is not by starving the agencies that measure the economy or the budget. The deficit savings aren't even a rounding error, but good policymaking gets hamstrung.
BLS is taking a lot of heat for announcing that the CPS sample size will be reduced due to budgetary constraints. As the immediate past Commissioner at BLS, I'm here to tell you that BLS is not playing politics and that we are, indeed, losing the CPS because of poor funding and slow modernization. Congress can help fix CPS by demanding change and funding a better survey. During my tenure and particularly during the pandemic, we used Census and BLS unused travel and conference funds (as well as some Census 2020 funding) to plug the budget holes and vigorously pushed modernization as far as dollars would allow. Even so, response rates and operating costs continued to worsen. The survey's worsening plight is a tragedy: the Current Population Survey is one of the most important economic and social surveys conducted by the US government. That same government, however, has allowed this crown jewel of survey data to languish and sicken. It is not too late to save this program, but we are getting close to the point of no return. If you want the labor market and demographic data produced each month by the CPS, then step up and demand change in the survey and the funding to bring that change about.

Economists are divided over how many interest-rate cuts Federal Reserve officials will signal for 2024 at their policy meeting next week in the "dot plot" -- one cut or two -- following a lack of inflation progress in the first quarter. bloomberg.com/news/articles/… via @economics

#Fedspeak: I would pay special attention to Fed Governor Chris Waller and Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic. Both have been viewed as hawks this year (and last year for Waller). Both also are very pragmatic and react to the data. Neither are eager to cut rates anytime soon.
