50k(ish) is right! If you're as surprised by this as me and @npp_journal - you should be! Our LC is about 125% smaller than expected for our neocortex given scaling in other primates. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/article…
While estimates vary a bit across studies depending on methodologies, the human LC contains somewhere in the range of 50K. LC neurons are the primary source of norepinephrine for the brain,

Really amazing to work on this with such amazing scientists. This project was born out of @UCBerkeley biologists stepping up to a call for service. I'm really proud to see what can happen when a group like this puts laser focus on one goal and grateful to have played a part.

Excited to share a new preprint with part of my doctoral work in @KauferLab showing how a single acute stressor leads to long term and sex specific changes in myelination! 🧠
Juvenile exposure to acute traumatic stress leads to long-lasting alterations in grey matter myelination in adult female but not ... biorxiv.org/cgi/content/shor… #biorxiv_neursci

My first day as a freshman at @UCBerkeley , I learned about a new funny way to edit DNA. Now as a PhD student, I get to work with Jennifer Doudna @igisci on COVID-19. My hands are presently shaking because... well...
BREAKING NEWS: The 2020 #NobelPrize in Chemistry has been awarded to Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna “for the development of a method for genome editing.”
