The New York Times published an article claiming Jackson, Mississippi is one of the worst places in the nation to raise a family. It made me so mad I wrote about it: rooted.substack.com/p/im-rai…

It's my first day at @opencampusmedia!
I'd love suggestions on any and all books, experts, issues surrounding race and equity in higher ed you think I should be paying attention to.
It's been an honor to work at @MSTODAYnews with Adam, and I'm still gonna be rooting for this newsroom. They're hiring for a new managing editor (link in thread), so if you are interested and have questions about what the role's been like, hit me up!
Mississippi Today is Mississippi Today because of @KayAnneSkinner. A tremendous leader who has meant more to our newsroom's growth and success than anyone.
The "bittersweet" cliche has never felt truer for me, but I'm mostly just grateful for it all.

Some personal news - I can’t wait to get started with Open Campus later this fall! I’ll be helping newsrooms write thoughtfully about race and equity in higher ed.
🚨We are excited to announce that @KayAnneSkinner is our new managing editor focused on race and equity coverage!
Kayleigh will shape stories across our local network and guide our HBCU fellows, starting Nov. 1: shorturl.at/nNUV5

“You got to picture how hot it is. We’re in nothing but brick and steel,” Andrico Pegues, who is incarcerated at Parchman's Unit 29, said by phone. “Everything outside is double in here.”
He said he tries to cool down with a purchased fan and ice provided by the prison.
Inmates in the State Penitentiary at Parchman’s Unit 29 and other prisons are without relief from sweltering heat.

At the MS Center for Investigative Reporting @MSTODAYnews, we shine a light into a state too often trapped in darkness. Our story on the front page of today's @nytimes demonstrates the importance of our mission. Thanks @IlyssaDaly for your hard work!

Dr. Brown delivered babies at Merit Health Central for almost 20 yrs. The closure of the NICU last year was a major blow, but the absence of a general surgery department (one of many services to be cut) makes C sections "risky," he says. He left in May. mississippitoday.org/2023/07…
Hey Mississippi, we @MSTODAYnews just dropped a voter guide filled with info so you know who's on the ballot, where to go and what to bring to the polls on election day this fall. Take a look and share! mississippitoday.org/mississ…

We're proud to see @mintamolly and @ayewolfe represent Mississippi on panels at the 2023 @IRE_NICAR. Molly's session explores investigating inequity in higher education and Anna’s session with this year's Livingston Award winners looks at conducting complex investigations. #IRE23
"There’s been nothing like this exodus in the near past, in my lifetime.”
William LaForge, the Delta State president who was fired last year, spoke to Mississippi Today about the events that led to his firing and why so many college presidents have left in the last year.

@KayAnneSkinner and I won an award for this story over the weekend, great time to give it a read if you haven’t!
At MS Book Fest last month, @angiecthomas was asked how she felt about her books being banned in school libraries. She said "Nobody is taking the time to talk" to kids who see themselves in these books or have been positively impacted by them. So we did: mississippitoday.org/2022/09…

A fun read from @mintamolly
that gives us a rare glimpse into what IHL trustees are thinking during a presidential selection process
The notes provide a glimpse into how trustees are thinking about the key hire at Jackson State, which is not just the largest HBCU in Mississippi but the largest university in the state’s capital city.

This is truly one of the more bizarre chain of events I've covered in Mississippi politics.
Top Republican Party officials and campaign staffers scrambled this week to ease tensions after Gov. Tate Reeves this weekend waded into the divisive lieutenant governor's race.
