Authorised harvesting of mature plantation trees through open tender is not deforestation.
These are commercial plantations grown on rotation — not indigenous forest.

Forestry Principal Secretary Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, on the third day of his visit to China, toured Yu Village in Anji County and Xiaogucheng Village in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, to study community driven approaches to ecological restoration and sustainable land management.
The field visits, held under the Ecological Civilization Flagship Knowledge Exchange Programme, highlighted how environmental restoration can be integrated with economic development to improve livelihoods and build sustainable communities.
At Yu Village, the PS who was accompanied by the Forest Development Secretary Mr. George Tarus, examined the transformation of a former mining site through sustained ecological restoration and rehabilitation of degraded land. The revival of bamboo forests and farmland has spurred nature-based enterprises, including eco tourism and sustainable agriculture demonstrating how conservation can generate economic opportunity while improving community welfare.
The delegation then travelled to Xiaogucheng Village in Hangzhou, where they studied an integrated land-use planning model that balances agricultural production, ecological conservation and settlement development. The approach places communities at the centre of spatial planning and decision making, while promoting efficient land use to maximise both ecological and economic returns.
The two site visits offered valuable lessons on the role of community participation, science based planning and nature based solutions in advancing landscape restoration lessons the PS noted are directly relevant to Kenya's efforts to restore degraded ecosystems, strengthen sustainable land management, and harness resources such as bamboo to drive green economic growth and build resilient communities.
