A fan in Columbus heckled Messi before a free kick last night. Messi wagged his finger at the stands, then curled one in from near the corner flag, over the keeper, into the far top corner. His 76th career free kick goal, at age 39.
And here's the part almost nobody remembers. Messi spent the first decade of his career being mediocre at exactly this.
When he became Barcelona's all-time leading scorer in March 2012, he had 5 career free kick goals. Ronaldo had 30 at the same point. By the end of 2013 it was still 39 to 14 in Ronaldo's favor.
Then Messi rebuilt the skill in his late 20s. He tightened his shot selection, studied how keepers set their walls, and turned his weakness into the best La Liga conversion rate among the great takers. 8.5% against Ronaldo's 6.1%. Ten free kick goals in 2018 alone.
He has since passed Ronaldo. Now he's at 76 and closing on the all-time record, 22 years after his debut.
So the heckler picked a strange target. He taunted the one player in history who took his biggest weakness after age 28 and drilled it into his most reliable weapon.
That free kick was 15 years of homework, cashed in one swing.

Drilling has officially begun at Durupınar.
