I got to play the new officially licensed Final Fantasy board game early! Origins of Light: A Final Fantasy Game is a new board game licensed by Square Enix, inspired by the Pixel Remaster editions of Final Fantasy I, II, and III! 🎉 Developer Kess Entertainment flew me out to their Los Angeles headquarters to join other creators for an early playthrough, and it was an amazing experience! Up to four players set out to build parties of four from familiar Final Fantasy classes, earn Gil to purchase spells and equipment in the town zone, venture into dungeons to defeat nostalgic enemies, and become the Heroes of Light! Origins of Light features both competitive and cooperative play. I played the cooperative Final Fantasy I module, where players work together to defeat Garland, the Four Fiends, and ultimately Chaos to win the game! In competitive mode, the player with the highest score after defeating Chaos wins, with scoring based for defeating bosses and monsters, leveling up, using ultimates, and collecting death tokens. Players earn XP by attacking enemies, tracked with adorable little Chocobos! 🐥 Defeating enemies also rewards players with Gil and items. After earning 25 XP, characters level up and unlock new abilities, allowing players to further synergize their engine strategies with spells and equipment. Characters can even change classes when they reach Level III! I’m excited to try the Final Fantasy II module, which features flexible, roguelike gameplay, and the Final Fantasy III module, which introduces a drafting mode featuring 22 unique classes! I had an absolute blast and am so grateful for the opportunity to play Origins of Light early. ❤️ As a lifelong fan of the series, beginning with Final Fantasy I, it was especially meaningful to see so much attention given to the game that first made me fall in love with Final Fantasy. It’s truly impressive how well Kess captured the mechanics, nostalgia, and charm of these classic games.
