#MicrobiologyMonday: Bunsen burners are used to reduce airborne contamination. Data in #JournalSpectrum suggest the practice is not evidence-based and, except in some cases, Bunsen burners can be removed from practice w/o compromising research integrity. asm.social/33D
ALT Several resources suggest that an active Bunsen burner flame produces convection currents, which in turn push contaminated air up and away from a work area proximal to the burner.
Today I'm feeling v grateful I got the opportunity to do med school post-PhD. I've learnt so much and understand the context for my PhD work so much better now. There should be more opportunities for PhD students to get exposure to the clinical environment - I've found that intricate knowledge of a mechanism is most useful when placed in context.
This has been a thing for ever and ever - I literally don't even look at the vendor's figures when buying antibodies/ELISAs/etc because they cannot be trusted. We rely entirely on word of mouth recommendations and (costly) in-lab optimisation/validation, and kind of just accept this behaviour as normal. I would save a heap of time and money if someone could please sort this out 😅
I'm so excited to be part of the first @PrimordiaGrants cohort! I've been trying to get this idea out of my brain and into the lab for a while now.
We're performing a high-throughput experiment to validate targets that can reprogram macrophage function under hyperglycemic conditions - hopefully the first step in a much longer term tissue regeneration project. Stay tuned to see how it pans out!
