Deservedly scathing op-ed by the NYT: “If Democrats retake both houses of Congress, and more state governments than they now control, it will tell the world that Mr. Trump does not represent most Americans. It will demonstrate that a country that starts to slide toward autocracy can move back to normalcy, as happened in Hungary this spring. Most important, it will create a desperately needed check on Mr. Trump during his final two years in office. … In a 21-month span, he has done more harm to democracy and the rule of law than any other president in the modern era and perhaps longer than that. He has broken his oath to defend the Constitution by trying to rewrite it on his own. He has refused to honor Congress’s power of the purse and misused national security laws for political ends. He has defied federal court orders on Medicaid funding, deportation orders and more. He has dismantled the Justice Department’s legacy as an impartial enforcer of federal law, turning it into an instrument of retribution against his adversaries while canceling investigations into his allies. He has appointed inept sycophants to oversee crucial government functions, including law enforcement, national defense and public health. He has sought to disenfranchise large numbers of voters, claiming fraud that cannot be found, and championed an extreme new approach to partisan gerrymandering. He has physically besmirched the White House by demolishing the East Wing and financing a garish renovation with donations from wealthy allies.” nytimes.com/2026/10/27/opini…

This is the moment Channel 4 News Foreign Affairs Correspondent Secunder Kermani was charged at by a group of Israeli settlers in the Occupied West Bank. The settlers have laid siege to a Palestinian home, while nearby Israeli soldiers keep watch but do not intervene. Violent attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank have risen dramatically over the past two years, while Israel's government has approved a record number of new settlements.

Once again, @TheStalwart and @tracyalloway explore the weeds. Sometimes the weeds are mainly of interest to finance nerds - people addicted to Bloomberg. But this is one of those times that should interest all, and shock some.

This is how the majority of us in London feel. (Of course, over here we are all communists and Islamic terrorists. A strange mix. But if you can believe that the Nazi Party was socialist, I can also understand your confusion.)

Elon Musk found us here. We’re indigenous to this land.
If people dislike Elon Musk so much, why do they still use the platform he owns?

Film recommendation, this one available on BBC's iPlayer . "Eye in the Sky." Starring Helen Mirren. She doesn't need to do anything but good films. It's about collateral damage and the decisions that are taken. It's a commercial film, glossy and designed to tug your heart.

But it highlights some important issues. And asks the viewer the question. Would you pull the trigger? Are you the military, a politician, a lawyer? Great script, cast, director and editors. Entertaining, as commercial films must be, but slips in those issues. Intelligent.

Dublin in the 1890s. Imagine the clatter of hooves as a horse-drawn fire engine comes thundering through the streets, people quickly making way as the firemen race to an emergency. This was a Dublin of horse-drawn trams, carts and carriages, when the streets echoed with horses' hooves and iron-rimmed wheels. #Ireland #1890s #VictorianEra #SocialHistory

One of the great coincidences in finance: In 1952 Harry Markowitz published "Portfolio Selection." It became the foundation of modern asset management. The idea is that you optimize a diversified basket of assets along an efficient frontier by claiming to know what the currently “efficient” part of the frontier is (even though no one actually knows which assets will perform most efficiently in the future). That same year a British actuary named Frank Redington published "Review of the Principles of Life-Office Valuations." It showed how institutions could immunize their liabilities by matching them with assets across time. It became the foundation of institutional asset-liability matching. Almost nobody outside of insurance and banking knows it. The interesting thing is institutions adopted Redington because matching assets to liabilities is just the sensible way to manage cash flows. Meanwhile the industry sold Markowitz to retail investors….

Oh dear, how sad. (Story link below.) Meanwhile: on what planet is a *Microsoft* operated data centre "sovereign AI"? Does anyone other than (presumably) the unlamented Keir Starmer believe this?

I see that GB News (the most popular and trusted news source in the UK) is about to launch a radio station:- "dedicated exclusively to artists from Great Britain and Northern Ireland." British artists should be supported, of course.. But what is this damn thing?

Music is not like that. It's international. Has been for centuries. Artists draw from and are inspired by many sources. They don't limit them by nationality. As GB News and its viewers would like.

I think this might be the first time in American history you’ve seen a Muslim candidate demonstrate a part of their prayer in an ad like this. In response to attacks about his faith, Abdul doubles down on who he is. Takes courage to do this.
As a man of faith, I pray every day. Faith is a thing there’s just too little of in Washington.
