When the superintendent visits a school, everyone makes sure they're welcomed, respected, and taken care of.
But what about the people who keep that school running every single day?
Custodians are often the first to arrive and among the last to leave. They clean up after school events, respond to unexpected messes, and make sure classrooms are ready for students and teachers.
Yet their work can become so routine that people stop noticing it.
Respect goes beyond saying thank you. It's giving custodial staff advance notice about events, cleaning up what we can ourselves, respecting their time, and including them as valued members of the school community.
And students are paying attention.
They notice which adults we greet, which ones we thank, and which ones we walk past without acknowledging.
We can't teach students that every person deserves respect while treating some of the adults in our schools as more important than others.
A person's job title should never determine how much kindness, dignity, or respect they receive.

My students are ❤️ing the porcupine stepping stones. I would ❤️ to add these items as well to help give my students a movement break. Can anyone help grow my mini motor lab?

When you work at a small school, you are on every committee. There’s something going on every month. It’s a lot of work, but we do it because we genuinely care for our students. That’s why I want to make sure each child goes home with a gift for Christmas. amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/EM…
October has been super busy and extremely stressful for me. I think that’s why I’ve been getting migraines more frequently. Now my mind is focused on getting Christmas gifts for students. Not every child will have a gift under their tree. Will you help me? amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/EM…

I agree that waiting until third grade to identify and intervene is unacceptable. But we need to be VERY careful with the claim that early intervention can somehow remove a child’s dyslexia designation. Early intervention does not cure dyslexia. It can dramatically improve reading outcomes, reduce the severity of reading difficulties, and help children become accurate, fluent, proficient readers. But becoming a proficient reader does not necessarily mean a child is no longer dyslexic. Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental learning disability, not simply a gap in reading achievement. A child may respond beautifully to evidence-based instruction and STILL have underlying difficulties with phonological processing, rapid naming, spelling, automaticity, or written language. When we confuse successful intervention with the elimination of a disability, we risk removing the very supports that helped the child succeed. We also need to distinguish between a child who was at risk for reading difficulties and whose difficulties were prevented through early instruction, and a child who has been comprehensively evaluated and identified with dyslexia. Those are not interchangeable. Yes, early identification and intervention should absolutely be the goal. But so should comprehensive evaluations, appropriate identification, accommodations, and continued support when needed. The goal should never be to make the dyslexia designation disappear. The goal is to make sure dyslexia doesn’t prevent a child from becoming a successful reader. And success in reading should never be used, by itself, as evidence that a disability no longer exists.
It’s all getting real: Spent the morning proofreading the typeset pages of my new book The Wonder Years: How the First 45 Months Shape Your Baby’s Brain… and Who They’ll Become.
The book hits shelves on July 13, but you can pre-order now. Want your copy signed? Check out my pinned post to learn how!
Can I get this all on a jumbo poster?!?
TRUTH . TRUTH . TRUTH
A teacher pushes back on a decision in a staff meeting. The discussion ends, but sometimes the consequences don't.
Suddenly, they're left out of conversations. Their concerns are dismissed more quickly. They start wondering whether speaking up was worth it.
Other educators notice that, too. And pretty soon, people learn that agreeing is safer than being honest.
Leaders don't have to change every decision because someone disagrees. Sometimes the original decision needs to stand.
But people should be able to challenge an idea without worrying that it will change how they're treated afterward.
Otherwise, you might get agreement in meetings while the honest conversations happen somewhere else.
