dont know if this is really just a politics thing, but no individual is going to be able to embody the cure for the way things currently are, it just takes so much more than that.
but shared values, focus, commitment, building networks and belonging - these will get us there.

Unacceptable. NZ should not be enabling the Iran War, which is both illegal and against the interests of Kiwis. The United States is actively making the New Zealand state less accountable to its citizens rnz.co.nz/news/politics/2149…
this might end up being one of the worst disenfranchisements in modern NZ history, and zero established institutions - particularly media - did enough to raise awareness or effectively wield power to stop it
an indictment of every single mainstream leader in the country, frankly

all of the people who came up to me and others in line at the polling booth and found out they couldn't enrol were elderly, mainly white + one older chinese couple. i don't think it's unreasonable to think that they might not have heard about the new change to enrolment rules
Replying to @dreadconquest
Did you tell them that under the Electoral Act, they were required to enrol once they turn 18?
this is literally happening in NZ right at this moment, with only weeks till our election
and NZ's Labour Party leader, Chris Hipkins, is as far from a popular, effective politician like Lula as you can get
we will be VERY lucky if we throw out the current rightwing government

This investigation of the failed back-channel attempt in 2022-2023 to reach a peaceful settlement on terms highly favorable to Ukraine exposes as flawed some of the “unquestioned truths” in the discussion of the war.
For example, the idea that Putin has been bluffing about nuclear strikes. Or that all negotiations and compromise proposals have been a sham, because Putin would never accept anything but Ukraine’s capitulation. Or “Russian imperialism” as the primary explanation of the war. In a weaker position after the painful setbacks of fall 2022, Putin drew his red lines, which are, surprise, surprise, Ukraine’s neutrality and Crimea. In 2025, at the peak of Russia’s accelerating advances, he was satisfied with the “Anchorage” terms, which are basically the Istanbul demands plus territory, used as a punishment and a means of pressing for their acceptance. They are still miles away from anything that could be called Ukraine’s capitulation, the elimination of its separate identity, the destruction of the independent Ukrainian state, and so on.
That these and similar dangerous and absurd ideas dominated the expert field is a sign of a deep intellectual crisis.
At one of the tensest points in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, two Americans teamed up with a former GDR spy to stop nuclear war. They just needed to tell Putin.
On the cover of @FTMag this week, one of the most extraordinary stories I've ever reported:
ft.com/content/dcb57f30-bbfe…
we'll be going on hiatus with 1/200 after the election
I, personally, will need a long break to slow things down and recharge, at the very least
there's a lot of other stuff that needs to be done in Aotearoa, and some of them are more important
left space maintenance for one
there are probably hundreds of people that realise this is an issue, but a mixture of conflict aversion, burn out, careerism and etc mean there are very few able/willing to do much about it. People who try are often seen as villains for rocking the boat, or out of expediency.
