The Nazi guards never heard the baby crying inside her toolbox. If they had, 2,500 children would have died. In 1942, a 32-year-old Polish social worker named Irena Sendler walked into the Warsaw Ghetto carrying a simple toolbox. She had a permit to check for typhus outbreaks. The guards waved her through. Hidden beneath the wrenches and rags was a six-month-old baby. She walked past armed soldiers and handed the child to a Polish family waiting outside the walls. The next morning she walked back in and did it again. For three years Irena smuggled approximately 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto. She hid infants in toolboxes, sedated children and smuggled them in coffins, concealed them in ambulances under stretchers, and used sewer pipes. Every child received a new Polish name. Irena recorded everythingโ€”real names, new names, locationsโ€”on tissue paper sealed in glass jars and buried in a friendโ€™s garden. By October 1943 the Gestapo caught her. They tortured her, broke both her legs and both her feet, and beat her unconscious. She gave them nothing. After months they sentenced her to death. The night before her execution, the underground bribed a guard. He led her out and recorded her as โ€œexecuted.โ€ She went immediately back to work and continued until the war ended. When the war ended she dug up the jars and spent months trying to reunite children with families. Most parents had died in the camps. For decades almost no one knew about her. Then in 1999 four teenage girls in Kansas found a brief mention of a woman who had saved 2,500 children. They researched and wrote a play. At age 89 Irena Sendler became famous. She was honored by Pope John Paul II and nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She died in 2008 at age 98. One estimate suggests those 2,500 rescued children produced approximately 6,000 descendants. She was a social worker with a permit and a toolbox. She walked into hell every day for three years and walked out carrying children. The Nazis broke her legs. They couldnโ€™t break her will.

Good to see well done BBC Exciting news! Naturewatch launches on Friday, 6 November, and the show will run year-round as a weekly video podcast based near Bristol. Packed with science, stories and wonder, I hope it will inspire viewers to get outside and reconnect with the wildlife around us.โ€ Naturewatch begins on Friday 6 November. You can view it on BBC iPlayer or listen on BBC Sounds from 6am, and then watch it at 7.30pm on BBC Two.

Thank you, Niall, for sharing the story of this adorable Chihuahua. How can someone be so cruel and sleep at night after dumping such a sweet little creature not on the street, but in the jungle? She must have been terrified poor thing! She could have been killed by another animal. I'm sorry she lost one eye, but I have no doubt that she will be so loved and cared for even without it. I'm so happy you rescued her and that she is now in a safe place. Waiting to see what name you decide to give her. ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ๐Ÿพโœจ @NiallHarbison

This mesmerising image of a diving Gannet won the world's top bird photography prize. It was taken by photographer Henley Spiers off the coast of Shetland in Scotland. THIS is where Gannets belong, not in the body bags of the Guga hunters!

Sometimes we come across dogs and we fear the worst but I think we got to this gorgeous gentle boy, just in time. He'd clearly been hit by a car and also dragged underneath it when two of our team came across him first thing this morning. When I arrived I could clearly see he was still in shock, with his heart pounding and his body and mind in absolute turmoil. Luckily it was only about a 5-minute drive from our little hospital and we were able to get him in, get him treated, and onto the best possible pain relief and medicines. Despite being in so much pain it's unbelievable how nice and gentle he was in terms of his nature. I decided to call him Bruno because that is the meaning of brown in several languages like German. Let's hope we can get him mended, feeling a bit better, and create a better life for this gorgeous boy. Lying at the side of the road, soaked and in agony, will soon become a distant memory for this boy.

I really give up. Everything is a lost cause. Just no hope. The EU has sanctioned the killing quota of 132,000 EUROPEAN TURTLE DOVES - one of the most endangered bird species of our time. They won't stop until it is extinct. Disgraceful and unforgiveable
