When I was an 11 year old boy living in Council Bluffs, Iowa, our very own Senator Tom Harkin changed my life and gave me, and so many other disabled Americans, an on-ramp to society.
Throughout our campaign, I’ve said it will be beautifully poetic when the man who takes back Senator Harkin’s seat is only here because of his work. Iowa, together, we made history, and we wrote beautiful poetry.

I remember getting into arguments with even Black Republicans over how stupid this strategy was. Most of these southern states have large Black populations. The VRA districts were the detente between the Black and white political dynamics in the South.
When Republicans betrayed that, it made Black voters feel like they no longer had a seat at the table under Republican governance and lashed out en masse. Which is EXACTLY what I told many of you would happen. I am not from the south, but my family is and several members of my family from the great migration generation are still alive today. As a result I have a certain level of sensitivity and consciousness of those dynamics and that ain’t nothing to play with. It also didn’t just anger Black people in the south. It had a reverberating effect everywhere

Jeffries and Schumer bear responsibility for the astonishing passivity of Congressional Democrats in the last two years. They could have organized local and state resistance efforts to rescue programs killed by DOGE and Trump, to keep scientific research alive, to organize universities, law firms, media, and corporations to resist Trump's intimidation. They could have held press conferences and posted videos every single day to call out Trump's corruption and present an alternative vision for the country. Chris Murphy did it, others did it.
But not the leaders.
We will have no presidential candidate for 18 months. The task of presenting a vision that will lead America back from the darkness will fall to these two men. I wish I felt more confident they are up to the task.
