Here’s a story for you. We started filming without owning the title and had to do alternates. Taft Broadcasting owned the title Ghostbusters as part of their half-hour sitcom starring Larry Storch and Forrest Tucker (F-Troop) and a gorilla chasing ghosts. I had never heard of it. They didn’t have proton packs or Bill Murray. Columbia paid $500,000 to buy the name, but they really should have paid Dean Martin, from whom I first heard the term. In the film Scared Stiff (1953), he and Jerry Lewis (check out his acrobatic stair descent) are in an old haunted castle, and Lizabeth Scott asks Dean: “Who are you guys?” And Dean answers: “You’ve heard of Trustbusters and Gangbusters, we’re Ghostbusters!” For my research writing the first movie, I watched every single ‘ghost’ comedy ever made. Bowery Boys, Hope and Crosby, Abbot and Costello, Martin and Lewis all did such films. Happy Halloween 2026.

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND (1972) contains an unbroken 30-second shot that shows Alice magically shrinking in the frame after eating a magic mushroom, which continues to baffle people for over 50 years. What you see really happened in one take with no cuts. There were no green screens, no compositing shots together and no digital VFX or CGI. It was captured in camera. How do you think this incredible shot was accomplished?

RAY GUNN by Brad Bird is a marvel to behold and a great ride to experience. It is also a 100% blast in a theatrical environment. It must be made available to be experienced collectively. It is wise and wholesome but also real and spectacular. Delicate and thrilling and erudite and popular. Brad Bird is, in my opinion, in the Western hemisphere, the most talented animation director at staging, not only action- at which he is a master- but purely cinematic moments of character revelation and connection (...)

I edited the sound fx in this scene in Tron: Legacy. The sounds from Sam’s motorcycle were from a Ducati recorded at Skywalker Ranch specifically for the film. We also recorded a police motorcycle & siren sounds. Working on this was a dream come true teapaw.org/FreddsCorner/status/16…

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA originally had a dissolve from the blown‑out match to the sunrise, but when editor Anne V. Coates and David Lean saw the two shots joined as a straight cut, they loved the shock of it and kept it, trimming two frames to perfect it.

Kubrick staged many BARRY LYNDON shots to mimic real 18th‑century artworks, especially those by Gainsborough, Hogarth, and Constable. Wait for the wide shot here and it looks like a painting... until it starts to move.

Luca (2021) is massively underrated. Pixar built its sun-drenched look from Italian Riviera photography, and the hand-drawn touches were inspired by Miyazaki’s early films. A gentle coming-of-age story with some of the studio’s most heartfelt animation.
What is the greatest animated film of all time?
