Not to sound like I know any better, but it's likely comes from how alot of Mari fans connect to her, so therefore any attack on Marinette is an attack on them, therefore the harsh defenses.

Don't even try to explain this design to me, there's no way to defend it, there just isn't, i'm sorry. Even if you want to make a point about some symbolism related to Adrien, this is simply HORRIBLE and there's no excusing it. THEY DID HIM DIRTY.
