🚨BREAKING: All Britons may need ID to use social media, the UK's online safety regulator today announces “This plan for a government ‘social media ban’ is a national ID system by the back door. Both the government and Ofcom have admitted that children will get around the ban, which means the real effect will be normalising adults and children alike to hand over their passports just to get online. Hundreds of thousands of people without ID, who tend to be poorer people, and many more who don’t want to risk handing their passports over to foreign tech companies will be locked out of huge parts of the internet. The plan will kill anonymity online, whilst the UK’s culture of speech policing is reaching a crisis point. The policy is painfully misguided, an Orwellian assault on free speech and privacy, and will make children no safer at all. The false illusion that children aren’t on social media will cause the companies to abandon all their child safety measures. The Government could be promoting meaningful safety measures and supporting parental controls that genuinely protect children - instead, they’re demanding government ID from the whole population just for uncensored internet access. It is authoritarian madness.” - Silkie Carlo | @silkiecarlo Read ⤵️ telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

Head of OBR told Nick Robinson: "The total of welfare spending hasn't changed all that much [over the years] in the scheme of things". Anyone think that will stop Robinson and others banging on about "ballooning welfare"? No, me neither. #r4today @BBCr4today #Budget2026

Scotland just delivered one of the most powerful clean-energy statements in modern history. On multiple occasions, the country’s wind turbines generated around 200% of national electricity demand, producing far more power than Scotland itself needed. It can be done!!! No time to wait. #ActOnClimate #renewables

I am so sick of hearing MPs talking about "getting the welfare budget down" yet never addressing the fact there are no jobs-currently under 700k vacancies with 1.7m people actively looking for work. Where do they think those they plan to kick off sickness benefits will find work?

‼️ This FT chart tells the energy story. Britain has transformed its electricity mix. Coal has virtually disappeared. Wind and solar have surged. Yet gas still plays an outsized role and because gas often sets the marginal electricity price, a geopolitical shock in the gas market can still push up bills across the whole system. 🔥 This is the trap. We have partly decarbonised generation without fully decarbonising price formation. @JohnHealey_MP now appears to understand that. Removing standing charges may help at the margin, but the bigger prize is breaking Britain’s exposure to volatile global gas prices, investing in grids, storage, renewables and secure domestic generation, and ending the absurd situation where cheap renewable power can still be priced off expensive gas 👉 and reconnecting to the EU’s Internal Energy Market. Energy reform is cost-of-living policy, industrial policy and national security policy - and climate policy.
🚨 Scrapping green levies may shave bills now. But the real problem is still Britain’s exposure to volatile gas prices. The fix is cheaper renewables, storage, grid reform and reconnecting to the EU’s Internal Energy Market. Energy security is the route to permanently lower bills.

It blows my mind how economists keep coming up with the same stupid solutions: cut government spending, slash taxes for the rich, raise taxes on the poor, scrap welfare benefits, deregulate financial markets, get rid of basically everything… And then, time and time again, they act surprised when the result is chaos, unemployment, poverty, depression…
MMT tells you a monetarily sovereign nation can issue all the currency/debt it wants and nothing will happen, claiming that currency and market volatility can easily be eliminated by cancelling the capital account. This nonsense can only be promoted by someone that does not understand that the currency collapse and creditworthiness slump are driven by domestic citizens and savers rejecting the local currency; it is not an evil conspiracy of foreign investors. Furthermore, no nation is monetarily sovereign. It always depends on demand. Try to force use or restrict flow, and the currency is worth nothing. And local citizens are the first to reject an increasingly worthless currency issued by an irresponsible government. You are welcome

🚨 NEW: John Healey is set to announce the following in his Budget later - The gas standing charge will be scrapped to save £27 a year on a typical bill - Green levies on energy bills will be scraped "for good" - NHS prescription charges will be frozen at £9.90 for another year - Poorer households on benefits will receive extra help with energy bills before January's sharp rises - The VAT cut on electricity bills, which was due to expire in April, will be extended (though it's not clear if this will be announced in the Budget or separately) - The Government will remove the link between gas and electricity prices, which currently inflates household bills, "in the long term" - Banks will face higher taxes, with the surcharge on their profits potentially rising from 3% to 8%, making it the Budget’s biggest revenue raiser - HMRC will be given powers to seize money from the bank accounts of people who fail to pay their tax - The freeze on rail fares will reportedly not be extended beyond April - Online retailers like Amazon, eBay and Temu will be made responsible for collecting unpaid VAT from sellers to fund a cut in business rates for high street shops - The thresholds for income tax will be frozen again so another half a million people may be dragged into the higher rate - January's planned increase in fuel duty will be cancelled - Pensioners relying solely on the state pension will see their tax-free allowance rise to £13,036, in line with the pension increase, so they don't pay income tax - Billions in long-term borrowing to invest in defence firms and raise the share of GDP spent on defence (without breaking fiscal rules, as the investments are expected to generate returns) - The upcoming "Your First Home" scheme will be made more generous to provide greater support for middle-income earners - The Budget will also assume the Rosebank oil field is approved, which will generate "significant tax revenues"

The UK averages 159 rainy days a year and ranks fourth in Europe for rainfall volume. The last major reservoir was finished in 1992. Since 2017, the privatised water companies have sold off at least 35 reservoirs and bulk storage sites. The government have now been warned that “Day Zero” – empty reservoirs – could arrive before Christmas. We are a damp island that somehow managed to privatise the rain, sell off the storage and then act surprised when the taps run dry. The corporations took the infrastructures, paid the dividends and left us with a hosepipe ban and a warning about water rationing at Christmas. And meanwhile, successive governments let this happen while enabling enormous data centres to guzzle up huge amounts of water and energy Yet another example of the UK being turned into a corporation asset grab at the public’s expense. This is not just government negligence. It was a choice.

BREAKING: The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry has concluded that Israel has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity, including extermination, persecution, torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence, across the Occupied Palestinian Territory, while continuing the genocide in Gaza. In today's report, the commission found that Israeli military operations and settler violence in the occupied West Bank have formed part of a widespread and systematic campaign against Palestinian civilians since October 7, 2023. The report also accused Israeli forces of deliberately targeting Palestinian children, using sexual violence to intimidate and displace communities, and expanding territorial control through forced displacement. More than 34,000 Palestinians remained displaced in the West Bank as of August 2026. In Gaza, investigators concluded that Israeli forces continued committing genocidal acts despite the ceasefire agreement, including killing and injuring civilians near the so-called Yellow Line. The commission also criticized the Palestinian Authority for suppressing dissent and failing to investigate abuses by its security forces. It called on Israel to end its occupation, dismantle settlements and return confiscated Palestinian land, while urging the Palestinian Authority to investigate violations and provide remedies to victims.

That story about Google killing hundreds of thousands of trees in Finland for its data center project is such a perfect microcosm of what capitalism is doing to our world. Recent mass media headlines are saying the tech giant "illegally" cut down "250,000" trees, but both claims paint an inaccurate picture of what actually happened. Google killed 400,000 trees (250,000 near a town called Muhos and another 150,000 near the village of Otanmäki), and unless the company's executives actually wind up going to prison for this, their actions cannot properly be described as "illegal". I don't know who first coined the saying "If the penalty is a fine, then it's legal for rich people," but it certainly applies here. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority has reportedly ordered Google to suspend all “measures that significantly change the environment," saying it will "consider enforcement proceedings and fines" if the megacorporation does not comply. Google's parent company Alphabet has a net worth of around four trillion dollars. Whatever paltry penalties Finland might impose for these ecocidal actions, it won't have any meaningful effect on Google. Giant corporations do this shit all the time. They calculate that the fines incurred by their abusive actions will be dwarfed by the massive profits they generate, issue fake apologies as needed, and leave it to their armies of lawyers to minimize the damage. That's why the Sackler family is still worth billions despite all the fines Purdue Pharma was slapped with while creating the US opiate epidemic. A 2017 Harvard study titled “The Opioid Epidemic: Fixing a Broken Pharmaceutical Market" contains the following paragraph: "Although civil claims and criminal charges were brought against Purdue and its executives, the resulting penalties paled in comparison to extended-release oxycodone profits. In May 2007, the company and its president, chief counsel, and former chief medical officer pled guilty to falsely marketing extended-release oxycodone as 'less addictive, less subject to abuse and diversion, and less likely to cause tolerance and withdrawal than other pain medications.' As part of the plea bargain, Purdue agreed to pay the federal government $600 million and 27 states $20 million. The three executives agreed to $34.5 million in fines but avoided jailtime. By contrast, Purdue has earned an estimated $31 billion in total revenues from extended-release oxycodone since its launch. Rather than deterring fraudulent marketing, the penalties simply became a cost of doing business." A cost of doing business. That's how things work under capitalism. The law primarily exists not to protect people or the environment, but to protect the interests of capital. If you destroyed a Google data center you'd probably be charged as a terrorist and spend decades in prison, but Google can destroy the natural world around you and get off with a finger wag and a symbolic fine. If you stole millions of dollars from your employer you'd go to prison for grand larceny, but if your employer steals millions from its employees you need to win a class action lawsuit to get back what they stole from you. Proponents of capitalism often pretend they support minimal government intervention in civilian affairs, but their entire model is at all times propped up by state power using force to protect the haves from the have-nots at every level of our society. Corporations are free to destroy the environment, destroy your health, rob you, exploit you, and manipulate your government to their advantage, and if you ever take action to stand up to this world-devouring onslaught, the state will lock you in a cage. In school we are taught that that the law exists to protect ordinary people from bad people, but that's not true at all. Under capitalism, the law exists to protect the very worst among us from everyone else. That's why we are seeing our planet being turned into dust and ashes for no reason other than shareholder profit. It's an insane system, and it needs to end. These freaks are feeding our entire biosphere into the woodchipper.

👀 A satellite study led by the University of Reading finds heat loss from the north Atlantic has fallen 18 per cent in 40 years. It's among the strongest signs yet that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, the ocean current system that carries heat north to Europe, is slowing. The study is still in peer review. newscientist.com/article/259…
