Thematic Commissions and Learning Sessions
During Days 1 and 2 of the Rural Women’s Assembly National Annual Meeting, delegates participated in different thematic commissions. The sessions promoted practical learning, dialogue and experience-sharing.
1. Land Dare Commission
The commission was coordinated by ZILAN, GROOTS Kenya and the Ministry of Women Affairs, bringing rural women into dialogue with traditional leaders. Women called for fair land allocation, while traditional leaders shared examples of how they are advancing women’s land rights.
2. Gender-Based Violence
Wadzanayi Community Development Trust coordinated discussions on the relationship between women’s limited access to land, economic dependence and gender-based violence. Participants noted that secure land rights can strengthen women’s independence and reduce their vulnerability to violence.
3. Legal Clinics
Lawyers from WLSA and ZILAN conducted legal clinics throughout the three-day meeting. Women received information and advice on land laws, inheritance, land registration and available legal remedies.
4. Alternatives to the Climate Crisis
Delegates discussed responses to the predicted Super El Niño, including water conservation, climate-resilient crops and livelihood diversification. The preservation, multiplication and sharing of indigenous and climate-resilient seeds were also emphasised.
5. Agroecology
Participants received practical lessons on preparing Bokashi biofertiliser and natural pest-control solutions. These practices can improve soil fertility, reduce production costs and protect the environment.
6. Agribusiness
Farmers exchanged knowledge on production planning, record-keeping, value addition, pricing and collective marketing. They were encouraged to approach farming as a business and make informed decisions that improve profitability.
Successful young dairy farmer and Information Sytems student at the Midlands State University , Yemu Mhaka of Gambiza Lot 78, Gweru district, Midlands province encourages young women to challenge the feminine stereotype where women are confined to household chores by pursuing careers in lucrative Dairy Farming.
