Edgworth Bess sold sex and helped Jack thieve and escape. Daniel Defoe blamed her for turning Jack bad (Defoe always blamed women).
He was a housebreaker and thief, but thief-taker/cop Jonathan Wild was much worse. Jack escaped from prisons 4 times and helped partner Bess escape too. The Life of Jack Sheppard: From Gin Lane to the Fatal Tree eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-life-…

Not the usual focus on a boring boy opportunist whose name has survived while the women's disappeared. Yes, this is definitely a feminist walk.
Witchcraft and witch-hunting at one of the worst places for it in the mid-17c: Manningtree, Essex. Based on archival evidence, centres 3 poor women. 2-guide walk w @rob_s_smith Sat 7 Nov, last time for a year. Country & town walking, 1 hr from London. eventbrite.co.uk/e/walking-t…

Strong women activists, too, like Olive Morris, Jocelyn Barrow, Claudia Jones.
Some young Black Britons who came on this walk were stunned to see sites of the 1981 uprising/fury/riots. Where their grandparents had stood. Surrounded by other forms of cultural resistance from blacks, gays, latinos. Walk the streets Sat 10 Oct. eventbrite.co.uk/e/black-whi…

Women 'serving' men includes providing food, drink, information, a bed, sex, a place to store things. Any or all for a price.

We've been brainwashed to believe Victorian ideas about women applied to all previous time. Not so.

Jack Tar was not always a man, plenty of women joined navy or merchant or pirate ships. These are Ann Bonny and Mary Read, pirates and not hiding their sex. More girls just dressed as boys, fought in battles. Rotherhithe next Sat @thamesfesttrust thamesfestivaltrust.org/what…

Women dressed as young men to work on ships, either because they wanted to or because an officer brought them. Children served as powder monkeys because of their size.

My first and still most innovative walk: ordinary working women simply don't appear in 99% of medieval histories. I learned most from marginal doodles in 14c illuminated manuscripts - all misogynist of course.
Since history books leave them out I created 6 women who worked by the Thames in Southwark in the 14c: scullery maid, victualler, laundress, alewife, sex worker, huckster. Not outcast-victims! Active poor who made lives. Sat 12 Sept. @ThamesFestivalTrust thamesfestivaltrust.org/what…

Disorderly: A badge of honour when it means coping with a cruel society, getting by however you can, not caring about 'respectability' over survival and independence.

Royal Mistress: one of the harder jobs
Your fantasy of classic English countryside come true in the city. This walk talks especially of women's lives working at court as maids of honour, royal mistresses and queens - yes these were jobs. In Totally Thames Festival 6 Sept: thamesfestivaltrust.org/what… @ThamesFestTrust

Come walk in Wivenhoe on the River Colne, a train-hour from London. A town transformed from shipbuilding centre to 'part-suburbia, part-bohemia with a dash of academia.' Saltmarshes, quaint houses, the Essex Serpent and boats boats boats. With @rob_s_smith eventbrite.co.uk/e/essex-est…

Migrant jobs include selling sex, picking pockets and other survival techniques rendered Criminal by a system that offers few to no legal jobs to them. With time and luck migrants may move into other jobs.
Working-class migrants do business, make families, invent objects, bring pleasures, help each other, fight and die together. Old Holborn/Clerkenwell show strong traces of the migrations of poorer folk 18-20centuries. Sat 18 July. @footprintsldn eventbrite.co.uk/e/walking-t…
