On Thursday I wrote about the 2014 injunction Russell Brand obtained against a woman who accused him of assault. I've now obtained the final order. It's breathtaking. She had no lawyer. No trial. Yet she was silenced for life - even barred from speaking to the police. 🧵:

What’s the plan Sarries! Losing our only premium prop… to Bath. still don’t have any prem level tightheads And not sure if Mawi is staying. Just Brantingham (injured for 80% of his time at the club so far) and 22 year O’driscoll left… What does our future look like?

Sione Va'enuku emptied the bins on Sydney streets from 4am to 1pm, then went training with the Roosters NRL team. He paid his way to the UK, paid his visa to stay, and fought his way from Ampthill to @Saracens. Long read with an early-szn Prem star 👇 rugbypass.com/plus/it-was-to…

🚨🇬🇧 No one is saying Danny Tommo intended to hurt anyone in his Channel escapade. At sea, that isn't the test. The test is what a competent seaman would do. He failed it four times in one afternoon. You don't crowd a rescue. Unless the coastguard asks for you, you stand off. Rescue is the most dangerous moment for an overloaded dinghy. People panic, surge to one side, and boats break up. Tommo drove a speedboat into a live rescue and picked out the dinghy with the most people on it. You don't take a knife to an inflatable with someone on it. When a tube goes soft, the boat loses its shape and its buoyancy fast. The rescuer was standing between two hulls. Go in the water there and you face a crush risk as well as the cold. That's basic seamanship. You don't leave wreckage behind. A half-sunk dinghy full of lifejackets can look like casualties to a helicopter or a passing ship. False alarms and mistaken identity cost lives in the Channel. In 2021, rescuers found the wrong boat, the search for the sinking one appears to have stopped, and at least 27 people died. These waters have already shown what happens when small boats go unseen. In 2006, three men died off the Isle of Wight when a ferry ran down their yacht. It never showed up on the ship's radar. The bridge didn't see it until it was too late. Small boats are close to invisible to big ships. Everyone who goes out there in one owes it to themselves, and to the rescuers who'd have to come for them, to act like it. And the oldest rule at sea: you help people in distress. Whoever they are, however they got there. Tommo's words on the livestream were "we're going to take the one with the most on." He wasn't going out to help. He was going out to find out where they'd land. Then he told the rescuer, "Get off the boat, you've got time." While cutting it. You don't tell a man he's got time unless you know he's in danger. He knew. He cut it anyway. Not malicious. Just dangerously ignorant, and reckless with other people's lives. On the water, that's worse.

My history and PE teacher at Hatfield School, Ian Vinter, was a Saracens player. In 1973, he took a minibus of pupils, including me, to Bramley Road to watch him play Rosslyn Park. Saracens won, and I was hooked. The seat I am sitting in today is the same seat I sat in that day, and every other time I could get it. From there, I watched generations of Saracens players come and go. Richard Hill, Kris Chesney, Alex Goode, Maggie Alphonsi, Amy Garnett and generations of families who have made this club what it is. I watched Saracens grow from a club where our best players left for bigger opportunities into one where the best wanted to come. That is what 150 years means to me. It is not just the history. It is the people, the memories and the generations that connect them. Bramley Road is where my Saracens story began. More than 50 years later, sitting in that same seat, it still feels like home. Ian died in 2025 in Torquay, still active in sport and much loved in his community. Rest in peace, Mr Vinter. And thank you for taking us to Bramley Road. ✍️ - David

We're proud of the lifesaving work our volunteers do in the Channel – we make no apology for it. Those we rescue are vulnerable people in danger & distress. Each of them is someone’s father, mother, son or daughter - every life is precious. This is why we launch:

Replying to @carolecadwalla
I've just remembered this and further details about Gavin Williamson tipping off Tice & Oakeshott about Banks's Russian connections is actually in my witness statement. Again, this is a matter of court record & is fully reportable. It just wasn't reported anywhere. 14/

Whatever the Environment Agency says, we *will* restore our river… Volunteers were back out on the River Roding this weekend, ignoring the threats & lies of @EnvAgency, to battle against the odds to restore a part of the river that the authorities have left to die. The stretch of the Roding around Ilford has some of the worst problems on the river: rubbish and invasive species on its banks; sewage in its water; and huge amounts of rubbish & debris in the channel. I applied for funding from the Mayor to sort out this part of the river (which would have paid for floating barges and skips), but having been rejected twice, I decided we should just get on with it. This is not an easy part of the river to clean, as the water is deep in places & the high concrete banks means it’s impossible to get large objects out of the river in most places. Luckily, our previous clearance of the area north of ilford bridge in May gave us an exit point, and I brought up a large rowboat and canoe. Teams in waders could load these boats with rubbish & then float them to be unloaded & the waste taken up onto the road. As some of the debris was deeply buried in the mud, we set up a winch on one of the trees to haul it out. We got an unbelievable array of crap from the river: a TV, mattress, shopping trolleys, pipes, traffic cones, random bits of metal and even a bench, which is now cleaned off and offers a place to sit beside the river. This section of river- right in the centre of Ilford- could be genuinely lovely. Whilst it’s in a desperate state, we saw large mullet, dragonflies and reedbeds slowly returning along the edge where we had removed invasive species. There’s still much to do though. Do message if you’d like to join us on Sunday 26th of July for another day of in-river cleaning at this spot.
