admittedly I've only seen the one film of his but when I watched The Killing of a Chinese Bookie that was the only time i've ever experienced true boredom while watching a film. Hopefully his other films are better but that hasn't exactly enticed me to watch his others
OK, I'll bite. If John Cassavetes is so insanely influential and brilliant, why have I not heard about him until recently? I've been on a side-quest with classic and esoteric movies, mostly through the Criterion collection. I've watched dozens of Criterion closet picks from filmmakers and actors I admire. They pick Cassavetes films ALL THE TIME. Probably more than any other director except Scorsese. I haven't seen a single Cassavetes film. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about a Cassavetes film outside of those videos. I'm not a slouch on film, I've got a pretty wide spread on what I've seen & what I appreciate. How has Cassavetes slipped through that net so completely for so long?

do the people who build this stuff not understand how evil it is?
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

if god is just these "people" will go to super hell

This is especially funny because shot composition is probably the most intuitive thing about movies. Does it look like shit? If so, that stems from bad composition 99% of the time

And as for the video essay comment I would argue that's almost the best way to discuss shot composition, blocking, staging, and reframing techniques. It's much easier to understand a video about how the camera moves than a book because books can't just show you like videos can

if you really wanna understand You Can See Everything you should read "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life" by Erving Goffman. The entire movie (and Fielder's recent work as a whole) is basically his concept of Impression Management put under a microscope

We let these terminally idiotic cops harass us every day why exactly? These guys are too stupid to make their own beds and half the population thinks they should get unlimited access to weapons and impunity to use them on the public.

DHS probably won't like me tweeting about cops again but we seriously can't have a civilized society until all these guys are gone and stripped of their badges

Cell phone addiction is an absolute thermonuke to the brain and nobody 'takes it seriously' because it is not clear that there is any solution in a world where the revealed preference of everyone across the globe, regardless of income, race, age, any factor whatsoever, would rather be on their phone than do *anything* else. Deciding "I use this too much" and meaningfully altering one's behaviour doesn't seem to have much success for any of the very small minority of people with the sentience or self-reflection to realize how bad it is. Most people seem to think of it as an unproductive habit at most, rather than an addiction. Any attempt to speak seriously about this is met with derision, accusations of pretentiousness. There is no real solution to it. The future of human cognition fifty years down the line is horrifying if you stop and think about it for even a moment.
