Agreements with independent contractors are work agreements which perform a variety of functions. In addition to saying that someone's hired, well-written contracts should define the actual scope of the contractor's work beyond vague descriptions that can be argued about or interpreted differently down the line. They should set clear and unambiguous payment terms and define payment timing before the first invoice, not after a dispute begins. They should clarify who owns finished deliverables and state in clear terms that contractors are not employees, which is crucial information for tax and risk management.
