Wojtek: The Bear Who Became a Soldier
In 1942, a group of Polish soldiers from the Polish II Corps stumbled upon an orphaned brown bear cub in Hamadan, Iran. After losing his mother to hunters, the soldiers took the cub in, naming him "Wojtek," which means "happy warrior" in Polish. Little did they know, Wojtek would soon become an extraordinary member of their unit.
Wojtek wasn't just a mascot. The soldiers of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company treated him like one of their own, even giving him a service number to allow him to travel with the unit. Wojtek shared in the soldiers' routines—drinking beer, playfully "smoking" cigarettes, and sleeping alongside them.
But Wojtek’s most famous moment came during the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944. Mimicking his fellow soldiers, Wojtek helped carry heavy crates of ammunition, earning him a place in military history. His bravery and strength turned him into a symbol of loyalty and courage.
After the war, Wojtek lived out his days in Scotland, but his legacy endures. Statues and memorials in both Poland and the UK commemorate this unique war hero, a bear who became a soldier and an enduring symbol of camaraderie and resilience.
