The goal of a Hybrid Navy is another step closer thanks to two milestones on @HMSQNLZ.
A Nyan effector strike drone has been launched from a UK aircraft carrier for the first time.
The ship also landed and launched a Tekever AR5 multi-role drone.

The disconnect between “we might increase defence spending by a few quid in 5 years’ time (but only if the welfare budget permits)” and “we will garrison a non-NATO state without major US backing (and order that garrison to fight the Russians if they attack)” makes the head hurt.
British troops will be allowed to fire at Russian forces if attacked during multinational mission

I think I’ve come across Britain’s single greatest architectural catastrophe since World War 2.
Victoria barracks, in Southsea. Would have made excellent housing and civic buildings. Alas, it was almost all destroyed in the 1960s. It survived the war….

If the government of the UK offers any more "aspirations" percentages of what it 'might' spend one day on its defences, I'm going to need more aspirin.
While declaring increases for the future for the media, it makes cuts in real terms today.
Sort it out, or I'll go public.

“Then there is the case of Norfolk, Virginia, where a British general recently took command of Nato’s Atlantic headquarters in September. To date, Britain has filled 44 of its 71 posts there. The ministry’s tepid response to this is that its fill rate across Nato is among the highest in the alliance. I wondered whether there has ever been a more meaningless metric. Back in the real world, if we cannot staff the commands we ask for, at what point do we stop being given them?”
“So how do we unpick this long-standing mess? First, consequences. Nobody in Main Building or the front-line commands has ever lost a job for presiding over this ritual, and the single services are not innocent: each protects its own headquarters and sacrifices its own capability. A few sackings would concentrate minds, “pour encourager les autres”, as Voltaire had it, even if the execution he alluded to might be a little extreme.”
“A friend of mine summed it up succinctly: “The pushers of this ‘jam tomorrow if we can just take a bit of famine today’ theology are now amongst the highest ranks. A theology which is clung to despite several iterations of proven failure.” Grim, but unarguable.”
“So long as it remains in the Treasury’s interest to run defence year by year and the decision makers that could force this to improve either fear anything that challenges the status quo…[or defence itself], then nothing will change.”
“Next autumn there will be another round of cancelled exercises and another speech about a war footing. This cycle of cuts and waffle is about the only thing in British defence right now that is reliable.”

In 2005 we had 20 frigates.
3 sold without replacement
4 scrapped without replacement
8 decommissioned 2021-26 before their replacements were ready, because we built ships for a 18 year service life, then took a 20 year gap in frigate orders, and take 10 years to build new ships
🚨 ROYAL Navy is on track to have just ONE working ASW frigate available for ops next year.
They need 13
They have 5
2 could be ruled “unseaworthy” in months as per @NavyLookout
That leaves 3, all over 24 yrs old
1 on ops
1 in work up
1 in maintenance
