Reading Emma Grede’s book, Start With Yourself, and this part about Old Thoughts definitely makes me think about my current journey… Removing old thought patterns and ways of working (even good ones) from my career so far, and moving into a new era with a new pace. A conversation that came up this past weekend was my ability to manage international teams of 150 people to meet product milestones—tech product milestones, and hardware at that. Launching an idea into a Gen 1 product within 18 months, or keeping up with a new computer every year, to meet a consumer holiday season, or consumer expectation for yearly product updates. It meant EVERY SINGLE HOUR of the day mattered: Meetings from 9am-5pm with the corporate team on vision, strategy and design. Daily calls with Asia teams to give engineering direction from 7-9pm. Check-ins and responding to questions via secure chat app until 11pm, sometimes 12am. Waking up to synthesize the Asia results while catching the tech shuttle bus at 7am. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were at the office. Working around the clock, almost on military time. Now I see that the well-oiled machine was actually the tech military, even though it gave me some of the best experience and training in the world. Operating at this level is far beyond most work environments—and its brand equity and financials are proof. 🍏 But there comes a point when that operational pace becomes a hindrance to thoughtful design, engaged development, and quality delivery (moving from scale back to innovation in the product lifecycle). So as many people enter this new tech era, I wonder… How might we move “slowly, but surely”, with “conviction and clarity”, while maintaining “balance and flexibility”? Legacy work is not rushed for an arbitrary deadline; Legacy work is intentional, impactful and focused on doing what is right, relevant and reliable. ⚡️
