Paper straws are STILL worse than plastic…
A 2023 University of Antwerp study tested 39 straw brands sold in Belgium. Researchers screened for PFAS, the “forever chemicals,” that don’t break down easily & build up over time (as well as being endocrine disrupters
PFAS appeared in 27 of the 39 brands
Paper straws were most likely to contain them: 18 out of 20 brands, 90%, tested positive
Plastic came in at 3 out of 4
Bamboo was 4 out of 5
Glass was 2 out of 5
Stainless steel showed 0
18 different PFAS compounds turned up, with the banned chemical PFOA most common. The chemicals are added for water resistance or enter through contaminated materials. The researchers concluded paper and bamboo versions are not automatically better because they can add another PFAS source after disposal
A newer South Korean “government commissioned life cycle assessment,” compared conventional plastic, paper, biodegradable plastic, & bio based polyethylene across 16 impact categories from raw materials through disposal. Paper straws scored 6.33 times higher than conventional plastic on the human carcinogenic impact measure
Paper also scored 2.04 times higher on acidification
Conventional plastic recorded the lowest impact in 10 of the 16 categories, including climate change, acidification, particulate matter, & human toxicity
Bio based and biodegradable options also scored higher than conventional plastic on several measures
Stainless steel is the GOAT if you’re concerned with straws impacting the environment
