Dr. Lewis Allen

‘Every man loves the mercies of God, but a saint loves the God of his mercies. Not thine, but thee, O Lord, is the motto of a gracious soul.’ John Flavel

‘Better the sun were taken out of the heavens than the Gospel out of the Church.’ John Flavel

‘The devil is very busy with ministers in their studies, tempting them by the pride of their own hearts to gratify his designs herein. He teaches them how to paint the glass, that he might keep out the light.’ John Flavel

‘Those desperate and restless spirits have no other peace but in bringing us to the same misery themselves are in.’ Minucius Felix (3rd C AD) He would have loved Twitter 😳

‘What are ministers but the bridegroom's friends, ambassadors for God, to beseech men to be reconciled? When therefore all the elect are brought home in a reconciled state in Christ, when the marriage of the Lamb is come, our work and office expire together.’ John Flavel

Hugely important book, and a great read!

“Perhaps no man since the days of St. Augustine has written so largely in defence of the system of Grace; and, certainly, no man has treated that momentous subject, in all its branches, more closely, judiciously, and successfully.” Augustus Toplady on Dr. John Gill

My address for the next few months, preparing a critical edition of the Works of John Flavel

Absolutely

“It is clear that no church of God can be said to exist unless the Word is proclaimed, for that is its soul.” John Calvin

‘The Preacher’s Catechism’, now in Portugese. Aleluia!

Go, Sarah!

So encouraged, @porterharlow! Hope to return to writing on pastoral leadership themes once I've finished my DPhil later this year.

...and also, never put the Bible on the ground! 🤦‍♂️

Prepping for ch. 2 tomorrow
