Being associated with a politician allows you access to information, favors, and access to government machinery at a much higher level than the general population, and this is why even those who are just associated with politicians are highly respected. In the case of celebrities, association raises your social status. If you can find a way to steal $500 million like a politician, and slowly give away $50 million over the next 20 years as highly public donations, grants to the needy, money for religious events, etc. the vast majority of the population will treat you with very high respect, even though you kept 90% of the money you stole. Again, society does not respect your sacrifice. It only respects what you can do for them (which in most cases involves power and money, and sometimes high levels of technical skills).
