I got in line without asking if folks were waiting for the #monkeypox #vaccine. The line was full of swishy men, and the guy in front of me was wearing short shorts, a tie-dye tank top, and a string of pearls. I knew the line would take me where I wanted to go.

It must've been jarring to sit near me because just six pages of this compact novel caused me to both laugh and gasp multiple times. My noisiness probably made it seem like my Mai Tai was not my first of the day, but it was. Democracy is just that good. The book, anyway. 8/9

I thanked the overworked server, tipped generously, and left the Mai Tai while avoiding all other eye contact. After a few magical, restful days on this island, I can say among other things that I loudly recommend Democracy by Joan Didion. Also, the Mai Tai at Hula's. 9/9

In the late '70s/early '80s, construction of the Foothill Freeway (I-210) proceeded at a snail's pass due to cutbacks, the recession, environmental lawsuits, etc. The producers of CHiPs took advantage of the unfinished freeway by renting it from Caltrans to shoot chase scenes.
